This year’s edition of Boating’s Boat Buyers Guide features as diverse a fleet of boats as ever. But there is one common thread that links all of these boats, regardless of what type of boating their designers had in mind at the drawing board. And, no, I am not referring to the fact that they all float! more

Check out the touchscreen displays aboard the newest boats. Whether it’s a proprietary or private-labeled screen and system or one bearing the badge of a major marine-electronics-maker, fingertip access to navigation, engine data, accessory and lighting control is now the norm, not an exotic option. That you can stream the game or a movie to these screens from the devices we all now carry just adds that much more convenience. Sure, signal strength plays a part in that, but getting a signal was just as important back in the good old days, when we tuned in programming on a transistor radio powered by a 9-volt battery. That common thread is rate of advancement. Whether it’s a pontoon boat wired like a yacht; a center-console that runs and handles like a high-performance boat; a big, sterndrive-powered bowrider with interior appointments rivaling that of the most luxurious roadster; or a dedicated towboat intended to deliver watersports thrills for riders of all disciplines, boats of all types are a far cry from the “utilities,” “runabouts” and “ski boats” many of us might have learned on coming up through the boating ranks. more

Fortier Boats has been building semi-custom boats for over three decades, constructing over 500 boats in four different sizes from the iconic 26-foot “bass boat” to their 40-footer. A classic Eldridge-McInnis design makes their product an exceptional sea boat, and today’s Fortiers have been updated to incorporate the modern conveniences expected by buyers, including the expected fuel economy of diesel inboard engines. An exciting development is the incorporation of the revolutionary quiet and efficient Volvo IPS pod marine propulsion system in certain models.

Victor Insetta launched Insetta Boatworks to focus on building a large, efficient production boat that would revolutionize the way people looked at catamarans. He wanted this boat to have its roots in offshore racing but be designed to take people fishing and exploring. The result is the Insetta 45, a rugged, go-fast center console catamaran that is at home both inshore and offshore. All components are vacuum-infused using vinylester resin and closed-cell PVC foam core. Full-beam infused bulkheads and a onepiece shoebox-fit deck impart strength, rigidity, and beauty, and the one-piece aluminum hardtop with built-in laminated glass windshield will protect you from the elements while keeping all sightlines clear. The spacious console features access to a full-size berth, head, and galley. With its tunnel hull design, the Insetta 45 is smooth and stable whether running wide open or at anchor. It will reach over 60 mph with a1200hp bolted to the transom, but can also get over 2 fuel-efficient miles per gallon with the optional twin 370hp diesel I/O motor package. [links]

One of the best catamarans for ocean sailing in 2020 is The Privilege 435. This is a long-distance, light weight cruiser produced in the Gold Coast area of La Rochelle. The Privilege 435 is a heavy-displacement multihull that has been around for almost 30 years. This is a luxurious well-built yacht with a decent proportion that allows it to cross oceans safely. It has a 23ft 2in beam, 43ft 1in LOA, as well as good proportion with a low-slung superstructure which is perfect for low wind resistance. In addition, the Privilege 435 is equipped with 4 cabins and 4 showers and costs about $300,000 to $350,000. The ample interior makes for a comfortable vessel to withstand long- distance trips.
