A legendary design in its own right, the Sparkman & Stephens-designed Swan 65 became lastingly famous name in the first ever Whitbread Race in 1973-74. When it was won by Ramón Carlin’s Sayula II, finishing in 133d 13h. more
This was the first of many honors for the design: in the following Whitbread three other Swan 65s finished in 2nd, 4th, and 5th positions.
When the Swan 65 was first built at Nautor in Finland in 1972, it was easily the largest fiberglass yacht on the market. more
Yachting World has been asking top sailors and marine industry gurus to choose the coolest and most innovative yachts of our times, and Tracy Edwards, who skippered the first all-female crew in the Whitbread Round the World Race, nominated the Swan 65. Here’s the report: more
2nd placed Kings’ Legend was skippered by Nick Ratcliffe (Skip Novak was the navigator) and beat Conny van Rietschotens Flyer and Clare Francis’s Swan 65 ADC Accutrac. here
To make the project even more interesting is the fact Dream Symphony is being built mainly of wood, that is a real technological challenge since beyond a certain length traditional planking cannot be used because of the strain and stress the yacht is undergoing. Builders made an assembly work with laminates in order to create a solid and robust hull, completing the building with fiberglass as an external protective layer. more
The never-ending duel between EOS and Maltese Falcon will thus come to an end. It’s been quite a battle, with the Falcon claiming for leadership by considering its waterline length of 256′, 20′ more than the one of EOS, while EOS has always declared itself the biggest sailing yacht thanks to the bowsprit, with a total length of 305′.
The wood used in the making is iroko, a highly resistant wood that will absorbe the huge amount of work originating from the mast compression, stays and waves solicitation. more
It will have two decks, with a clear division between the owner’s area and guests and crew areas. A swimming pool will be built at stern, with a upholstery capable of sustaining the weight of a helicopter. The yacht is being built at Dream Ship Victory shipyard, Turkey. more

What we do know—sort of—is not only has Bezos’ ordered what will be the largest sailing yacht ever built in the Netherlands. Reports say the superyacht shipyard Oceanco is the builder. And that makes perfect sense since Oceanco has built Black Pearl, the award-winning, 350-foot-long, three-masted superyacht pictured above. And Oceanco also built the 357-foot-long Bravo Eugenia for Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. [links]

Actually, he’s buying a whole fleet of yachts. Not only is Bezos reportedly buying one of the largest sailing superyachts in the world (Superyacht A measuring 469-feet-long and owned by Russian billionaire Andrey Melnichenko is still the largest). He’s also reported to be buying a “smaller” support vessel that will follow the big yacht around carrying all the “toys” (personal submarine, aircraft, various other yachts, cars etc.) that just won’t fit on the mothership. And by mothership, I mean superyacht. Not spaceship. That’s a whole other story. [links]
During my previous life as an editor at several American yachting magazines, I was lucky enough to sail thousands of offshore miles on a wide variety of boats. My job as
But I am surprised that details, about what will no doubt be the most identifiable superyacht in the world when it’s launched have stayed as secret as they have. But then again, NDAs take on a bit more power when hundreds of millions of dollars are involved. And no yacht that is 117-feet longer than a football field can stay a secret forever. [links]
SEA EAGLE II's launch in Holland this winter.
That’s special because it’s actually not that easy to design and build a massive sailing yacht that actually sails well simply because superyachts that sail are affected by weight more than other superyachts. And superyachts that are built of steel and are well over 250-feet-long are…um…kinda heavy. more
And in addition to boasting what appears to be fantastic sailing performance, and of course, spectacular and luxurious accommodations, SEA EAGLE may also be the most beautiful launched this year too. In fact, I bet she’s going to clean up when Boat International’s World Superyacht Awards are announced later this year. [links]
