Most the time that is true although often if you book at the last minute it is cheaper on the Spirit of Tasmania than flying. I recently booked a flight for someone from Melbourne to Hobart a day before departure for $329.00AUD (this is a common price for a late flight booking when it has low availability) and the Spirit of Tasmania can cost as low as $99.00 per person at this time of year (the shoulder season) or as low as $69 per person in the winter time (off-peak season) in an Ocean View Recliner without a vehicle. The Ocean View recliners are not the most comfortable things to sit in overnight, but still $69 isn't too bad at all when you consider the cost of a last minute flight. If you book well in advance then it is usually far cheaper flying than getting the boat. here

P&O have a cruise that does go from Australia to New Zealand a few times a year, but it is a cruise and not a ferry service (and it is considerably more expensive than flying). [links]

One of New Zealand’s most popular and important routes, the ferry services across the Cook Strait are currently being provided by two different ferry operators, Interislander Ferries and Bluebridge Ferries. Providing 7 sailings a day, there are plenty of ferry services for you to choose from to get you between Wellington and Picton.

As there are so many different ferry services available from New Zealand, ferry times really do vary depending on what route you are taking. Routes lengths can take anything from 25 minutes, such as the ferry to Rangitoto Island, to 2 hours, such as the ferry to Coromandel, to 5 hours, such as the ferry to the Great Barrier Reef. To learn more about your route, please visit the specific route page.

There are currently plenty of ferries available to range of different islands around New Zealand, such as the ever popular ferry to Waiheke Island, which runs up to 49 ferry services a day, and the ferry to Stewart Island, Rangitoto Island, Montutapu Island and the Great Barrier Island. For more information about specific routes, please visit our dedicated routes pages for everything you need to know about these ferries.
