The last 44 to serve in the US Coast Guard, was the 44301 which was retained at Station Chatham in Massachusetts due to the special bar conditions there. She was eventually replaced by the 42001 and 42002 Special Purpose Near Shore Lifeboats which were especially designed for the station. The 44301 was decommissioned on the 8th May 2009 after 46 years hard work. She later returned to Chatham and is now displayed there overlooking the treacherous bar which she together with her crew navigated safely on so many occasions.
For an insight into the design and development of the 44, I am grateful that my friend Capt. Robert W. Witter USCG (Ret.) also agreed to write a few words for us.

Our boat rentals are perfect for your next vacation near Little Gasparilla Island Florida! We have several great options for you to choose from. Check out our three Carolina skiff rental boats, or our three comfortable deck boats along with our double decker 30 foot pontoon party boat. Two of the Carolina Skiffs are 19 feet long by six feet wide with very comfortable bow cushions for sunbathers. Our Sundance Skiff is 20 feet in length by seven feet wide and has a huge bimini top for shade from the Florida sun. Our two smaller rental boats are a 17 foot Carolina Skiff which is great for fishing with smaller groups along with a catamaran style skiff, which has a great sound system and is the newest boat in our fleet as of 2018. All of our skiffs are designed to run in shallow waters, are easy to maneuver, and you can pull right up on the beaches. All of the deck boats are fairly new additions to our fleet and are rated for 12 people. You can also rent our 30 foot double decker pontoon boat though we prefer an experienced boater for this boat due to it's size. Large groups love our double decker pontoon boat complete with shaded areas, a small kitchen along with a grill and a bathroom. This boat is Coast Guard rated for 12 people. Our Placida location gives our customers quick and easy access to the Gulf of Mexico through Gasparilla Pass. We service all areas around Boca Grande, Placida, Little Gasparilla Island up to Manasota Key. To pick up a boat rental in Englewood, we will meet you just across the street from Englewood Beach at Chadwick Park or at your private dock. Parking for boat tours or boat rentals is plentiful there between SandbarTiki Grille and the White Elephant Pub. Our boat rentals are available for daily, weekly and monthly use. Another pick up point for your rental boat is at 7080 Placida Rd. in Placida. This location is right beside Leverock's Restaurant and will give you quick and easy access to Stump Pass Beach State Park and Don Pedro State Park.
