There is also the Xtreme Cool patented ingredient that reduces water temperature and stops overheating of the engine. The instructions are fairly simple. Make sure the engine is cool and fill your radiator up with Bar’s Leaks Head Gasket sealer and put your car on idle for 15 minutes while keeping your heater on hot and your fan on high. It isn't permanent and can only increase the cost of your repair bill later on when its non-permanence rears its ugly head. Start by getting a combustion gas test and see if it is a head gasket issue or a more severe one like a warped head and/or block (due to overheating). here

Might work. I've used blue devil head gasket sealer and had pretty good luck. It is VERY IMPORTANT to follow instructions fully. You drain coolant, fill with water and sealer, then run vehicle for like 50 minutes. After you shut it off and it cools down you must flush the rest out. If you don't flush it good and leave it in there it will clog your coolant system and you will be worse off then you were. more

EDIT: I’m marking this as solved because I feel like my question has been answered. Thank you to everyone for your help.

Additionally, I have no money and little mechanical skill, so getting even the first repair made will be quite difficult. (Technically, I could afford to have the timing chain gasket repair made. but if the head gasket is also broken, I'm in deep trouble). more

In my situation, might it be worth it? What type of harm might a head gasket stop leak product do to my vehicle?

That said, I noticed some "stop leak" products on Amazon. What are your thoughts on these products? Do they cause more harm than good? [links]

I'm currently in a situation where I have a broken timing chain gasket on my 2003 Ford Taurus. My mechanic is also 90% sure that the head gasket is broken. (Apparently he can't get an accurate pressure reading because the timing chain gasket is broken). [links]

My older F150 had a cracked head that was leaking radiator fluid into one of the spark plug wells (shorting the #4 plug). Both of my most trusted mechanics said to get a new truck.
I used 2-qts of Blue Devil since my coolant capacity was slightly larger than that recommended for 1-qt.
Sealed everything up and the truck has been running great for a month. more

I know what people think about mechanics in a bottle, But this stuff WORKS . I bought 2 quarts to try and fis my nephews water leaking problem in his tractor. Man at the auto parts store asked why I was buying 2 qrts. I told him it was going in a tractor that was using 3 gallons of water in about 900 miles. We could not see where it was leaking so we figured it was going out the stacks. The parts store guy said I did not need to put 2 qrts. in that 1 was more than enough, I was skeptical and he told me this is the best sealer on the market today!! I followed the instructions on the bottle and crossed my fingures.
The truck now has more than 10,000 miles on it and still has not used ANY WATER . This stuff works and I'LL buy it again when and if ever needed .
