Areas in moorings and public harbors have pump-out stations to dispose waste properly. Be sure on your trip you plan accordingly, so you know where resources are available.

Not every boat is made equal, just as same as anchors. The proper gear will depend on the size of your vessel. There are larger boats that require heavier gear to compensate for their heavy displacement, especially when considering wind resistance.
An ideal place to leave your boat - whether permanently or just to go in to dinner - is a protected location without too much exposure to open water and winds. Finding the best anchorage is outside the scope of this post, but there are a few guidelines you can use. [links]
Florida has had several legal battles over anchoring rights, and other states in the U.S. have imposed similar local restrictions. These locations may not be clearly marked with signs or on charts, but using them may result in a visit to your boat from local law enforcement offering polite encouragement to move your boat, or worse, giving you a citation. here
How long can you anchor? If you are staying with the boat, you can anchor as long as any local regulations allow. If there are no regulations limiting it, you can stay as long as it is safe.
Harbors with permanent moorings have restrictions on anchoring too close to established fields. Submerged cables are a common reason for anchoring prohibitions, but those are often marked with indicators on land and always on charts. here
Marina and public rental moorings can be an affordable solution for boat storage in areas where private mooring permits are unavailable and a slip is too expensive. A good marina will inspect its moorings annually and watch boats in the field for problems. Many marinas will have a launch service to get you and your guests to and from your boat, as well as restrooms, picnic areas, grills, restaurants, and other facilities onshore customers can use. Re: Laws against anchoring in open water overnight here
Does anybody know the laws or have any general idea amongest all states?
well whenever i anchor at night i always stay out of the shipping lanes/channels and keep the anchor light on, but i wasn't sure if its still illegal. i'm in saltwater but as you had said tlynch, i think its illegal in lakes. must be for safety and/or lack of room to navigate. even though there are some gigantic lakes, i guess they dont want to draw a line between which lakes you can anchor over night in, and which ones you cannot. more
California you can not anchor in a channel ever but outside the channel it is ok but must display your white all around anchor light unless it is a general anchorage area which will be on the chart. [links]

I do not recall ever hearing complaints about houseboats being at anchor ( I was not on a houseboat so I should have heard the "bitchin")
I wonder whether the people that weren't happy with your presence was for other reason then you having a houseboat. [links]
I am planning a 1400 mile houseboat trip, and I was thinking about houseboat anchoring. I wonder where, or how long we can stay anchored, or anchor house boats in front of waterfront properties in the USA? here

I like this answer and agree getting along is the best policy. I too was wondering if putting a mooring down in Lake Monroe Fl was in violation of any ordinance.
