If you need a little help deciding what type of fuel to put in your boat, this complete guide for newbies should give you a great starting point to build up your boating knowledge.

Ensure that the pump you use has either ethanol-free gasoline or E10 fuel. This is relatively common, but there may be times when you encounter a gas station that sells only E15.

For the most part, outboard motors will run on E10 gasoline (ten percent ethanol and ninety percent gasoline). Older outboard motors, however, were not designed for E10 and may have problems.

Ethanol is well-known for being a solvent that can quickly corrode rubber and fiberglass. It can also loosen the debris that may be in your fuel and lead to a clogged fuel line.

There is a lot of debate over what type of fuel an outboard motor should use.

The problem, however, is that today’s ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel (ULSD) provides significantly reduced lubricity – a critical property in controlling fuel-pump and injector wear.

An old timer told me about this years ago. His business? He rebuilt diesel injection systems. Said Type F automatic transmission fluid is one of the best lubricant (and cleaner) for diesels…and it’s relatively inexpensive. [links]

Some diesel owners like to add a little 2-stroke oil to their fuel tank to lubricate the fuel system and upper end of the cylinders. Sometimes, people use regular motor oil, too. So, is it safe and effective to add 2-stroke oil to diesel fuel?

I accidentally added an oil & gas mix to my car's tank. The mixture was 50:1 - about 1 gallon of gas and 2.6 fl oz of universal 2-stroke engine oil, synthetic blend with fuel stabilizer (I had it mixed alredy for using it with a leaf blower).

The car had a half-full tank (about 20 gallons), therefore my expectation is that I have a 1000:1 gas to oil ratio currently in my tank. [links]

Does anyone has any advice on whether this can cause damage to my car's engine? I didn't drive the car since this happened and would like to know whether it is safe to drive it or I have to flush all the gas before drivving it?

I have enough marine mechanical experience to ascertain this is unburned oil draining down through the exhaust, and that my boats previous owner obviously was overmixing 2 cycle oil with the gas (my engine calls for a 50:1 ratio). My purpose with this post is to hopefully get some of your opinions on how bad it's overmixed given the symptoms described, Whether I can correct the problem by adding unmixed fuel, or whether I should just pull the tank (It's new replaced before I bought the boat when engine was done) drain the fuel clean it out and fill it up with fuel that I mix myself at the proper ratio. here

In addition, after running the engine on the muffs and placing my transom saver back in place I've noticed a very slow thick black oil slowly building up where my lower unit couples to the motor (right above where transom saver fits above cavitation plate), and running down my transom saver. more

Before I purchased my rig the previous owner always kept the tank full (mix ratio unknown) while out of the water. I bought the boat directly following engine having a fresh powerhead installed (new one because VRO failed) and before deciding to do my modifications I only had between fishing enough run time on the water to put about five hours on the motor so technically it's still in break in period, and have only been able to run about half the gas out that was in it's 25 gallon tank. Right now I'm just below the half tank mark.

My boat has a 200 hp rude XP looper (86 model) with the VRO removed so oil is mixed with gas manually. While out of the water for floor and deck mods also carpet redo I routinely run my engine on the muffs for at least 20 minutes per month or so.

Also, will 2 cycle oil settle toward the bottom of the gas tank while boat is sitting? I don't remember this being an issue but with todays gas containing ethanol (I buy additive when I can't find gas without it) I thought I'd double check to be sure. here
