AGM batteries, (short for absorbed glass mat batteries) , use a liquid-based electrolyte that is held within absorbent glass mats. The mats act as the separators between the battery plates.
GEL: The thicker, gel-like substance, that’s used within a GEL battery results in a slower discharge rate, meaning it can run for longer at a steady pace. GEL batteries are also well suited to variable terrain, poorer surfaces, and for use in higher temperatures.
The easiest way to help you decide which is best is to do a direct comparison of the two types. more
Hate to disagree, but I skimmed through to see if someone had already offered the opposite advice, which I believe is appropriate. Even Deep Cycle batteries will perform better, the less often they are completely discharged. Something about the build-up of crap on the plates. Using only 20 to 50% capacity is ideal, but at most you might expect to double the life of the battery anyway. As a rule of thumb; I'd simply charge it each day when you're done using it.
AH is simply Amp Hours, and you'll find BIGGER batteries will offer higher AH numbers. 12 VOLTS is what the machine runs off of, and it will not know the difference. except for BIGGER is HEAVIER, obviously. and it will last longer in roughly the same ratio as the AH is greater, minus a little for the added weight you'll be hauling around for it. Do note that any deviation from the manufacturers battery spec may require a change in battery connection (which any handy person could do in minutes.) Also note that any size/power upgrade will probably not fit in the little compartment, so you'd have to sacrifice the sleek looks for better function.
If the machine doesn't seem to be struggling with the load now, I would be tempted to change out the connections, if necessary, and replace that little specialty battery with a more standard Marine Deep Cycle Battery, as they are considerably cheaper and should last A LOT longer. Something like THIS. That one's available at Sears for $70 (with trade in), but you can find a similar battery just about anywhere car batteries are sold. I would expect much better performance with such a battery, for a lot less money, because it is so much more widely used and competition mandates the quality/cost ratio be a good one. The example I linked comes with a 1 year full replacement guarantee, 2.5 years pro-rated replacement if (when) it eventually weakens. more
Now if you put a bigger motor on it, the controller will be stressed.
I also real doubt you will get 15 miles out of a charge, probably lucky if 5 on new batts.. [links]
Re: Electric Scooter use car battery? [links]
If we will do this and replace it with a car engine, its high power due to its large size and a greater number of ingredients can lead to an explosion of the light engine or mobility engine. As they are there to handle way less power which a car battery can give to them. more
Likewise, The battery of the car is that high power battery about which we are talking above and the low power requiring engine is the engine of the mobility scooter. As the engine of the mobility scooter is very light it just needs a light power engine that may be already present in it before we tried to replace it with a car battery. more
Many times it happens that we have to urgently use some vehicle but we do not have that specific power battery which we can use to charge it and have some other power battery. So, the question arises in our mind is it safe to do this, to use some different power battery for a vehicle which is requiring some other power to start the engine and also do its other work.
Since a single 12 V battery also has 6-plates and a great number of electrolytes it generates very high amperage current. It has 48 Ah capacity. This means it provides 1 Amp current for 48 hours. An average car battery is of 600 watts-horsepower. more
