In 2012, Matt Damon wrote and produced the movie Promised Land which tried to villainize the natural gas industry. However, the movie was produced “in association with” Image Media Abu Dhabi. This company is completely owned by the government of the United Arab Emirates and is a huge exporter of crude oil and a member of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

Mark Ruffalo has been a huge critic of hydraulic fracturing or “fracking,’ a process for extracting natural gas from shale deposits deep underground.” He has even “promoted flawed ‘facts’ about how fracking causes water pollution” to further his cause, saying that this pollution in water can cause tap water in houses to catch fire. However, this has been able to be done since the 18 th century, long before fracking was used to capture natural gas and many of the reports of contaminated water have been proven “inaccurate or overblown.” [links]
In an interview by Climate Depot at the 2014 People’s Climate March, he was asked if “Gore and DiCaprio are really the best spokespeople to ‘fight global warming,’ since they have huge ‘carbon footprints,” Ruffalo brushed that question aside. He responded with “That is a question you shouldn’t be asking here today because that defies the spirit of what this is about.” Adding to that, he said that “[a]nyone who attacks Lenardo DiCaprio is either a coward or an ideologue.” He clearly sees no problem with DiCaprio flying around the world to attend multiple parties all on the same night.

Celebrities often use their influence and high profiles to bring attention to issues including equal pay, diversity in the entertainment industry, and — crucially — preservation of the environment. And with climate change growing more dire by the minute, it's more important than ever for all of us to do our part to help the planet. In honor of Earth Day, here's a look at some of the loudest voices in the fight.
Emma Watson: Back in 2011, Watson created Pure Threads, a "green" capsule collection in collaboration with Italian designer Alberta Ferretti. Each item was made from raw, sustainable materials, and the profits went to People Tree, an organization that works with manufacturing companies in developing nations to create low-impact garments. Leonardo DiCaprio: DiCaprio is among the most vocal celebrity eco-activists. In 1998, after filming Titanic, the actor established a nonprofit foundation that promotes environmental awareness and pledged $15 million in 2016 to help decrease the world's dependency on fossil fuels. DiCaprio has also served on the boards of ecological organizations including the World Wildlife Fund, Global Green USA, International Fund for Animal Welfare, and the Natural Resources Defense Council, and he regularly attends events as an advocate for conservation. He even used his acceptance speech at the 2016 Oscars to highlight the issue. "Climate change is real, it is happening right now," he said at the time. Brad and his wife Angelina Jolie are heavily involved in different areas of activism, hers mostly humanitarian related. Brad spends a lot of his time focusing on development and sustainability, much of it post-Katrina. He is also involved in the upcoming oil business exposing documentary “Big Men”.
Jane quite possible the most famous environmentalists. She is a celebrity because of her environmental activism, so as you can see, you don’t need to be a celebrity to be an activist, and you can also see the power of one determined individual. She has her own institute and continues to fight for the protection of animals, environment, and for individuals to do their part to help the environment. Her youth program Roots & Shoots has over 150,000 members in 130 countries.
Super Model Gisele Bundchen was named the 2011 Greenest International Celebrity of the Year. She has most recently joined the Rainforest Alliance board of directors. And just like tentree, she has been known to do some planting! here
This actress is best known for her fight against the Keystone XL pipeline and its climatic affects. She is the founder of the Sustainable Biodiesel Alliance and sits on many environmental advocacy boards. She has even been aboard for an ocean protest with Sea Sheppard! more
This movie star is a truly famous environmental activist. He produced the environmental documentary “The 11th Hour”. He serves on many boards that support animal and environmental activism including the World Wildlife Federation and Global Green USA. [links]
