Sorry to hear you're experiencing some issues with the belt tensioner on your Volvo D3-150. I've unfortunately seen this issue before as it sits below the impeller housing. When changing the impeller it's important make sure to rinse the tensioner afterwards with fresh water. You could also close the seawater valve and run the engine for 5-10 minutes with fresh water before swapping out the impeller. The belt tensioner part number is: 21424647. To replace, you'll want to remove the belt first, then there a single allen screw holding it in place. Once the bad tensioner is removed, you might try soaking it in some penetrating oil and see if that fixes it before purchasing a new one.

There are a couple videos that show an impeller change on an RT27 & RT25SC that you can view. Google "Ranger Tug impeller change" and you should find them. Basically to gain access to the area remove 3 panels: 1 in front of the step, 1 on the side of the step and the last one under the step. If you have the optional cabin heater you will find its fuel pump attached to the panel under the step. One of the videos will show how to deal with the pump. more

I have a 1982 Catalina 27 with a Universal 5411 and I would like to change the impeller on it. I'm not having any problems with it but the previous owner is unsure when it was last changed. The water pump looks like it was changed at some point because it has the newer model Sherwood pump found here which I don't think was normally used on a 82 model. The Catalina Direct site has a lot of nice information on the different water pumps used over the years and of course it looks like I have the most difficult one to change the impeller on. Catalina Direct says "Three machine screws fasten the cup onto the body of the pump. The heads of the screws are only accessible from behind the cup, an extremely unfortunate design choice." Another user of a different thread on this forum said it was "hell to change".

Jim: I'm glad Mike's detailed instructions helped you get the task done. I assume you were intent on changing the impeller because your engine had reached 250 hrs. Was this the reason ? here

You say you found the old impeller "..to be in great shape. ". So why did you change it out ? Did you simply want the experience of replacing the impeller? Having gone so far to get the impeller out maybe you said, what the heck I'll just place the new one in and suffer removing the old and inserting the new, which as I understand it can be a PITA. Why not leave the original in place and simply keep the new one as a spare and save some time and beat Mike's time ? This is what I did last September when my engine technician did our 250 hr maintenance and found the original impeller 'to be in great shape'. I have a brand new impeller as my spare. here

The R27 has nearly 50 Sq ft of aft deck space making the cockpit 25 percent larger than the original R25. This allows for easy access to the 200hp Volvo diesel and keeps the engine noise out of the cabin. The larger cockpit also lends itself to more above and below deck storage. The well appointed cabin has a midship office with desk and chair, this space also converts to a berth that sleeps two. The dinette table is on a hydraulic piston that allows for an easy conversion to a berth or lounging area. The spacious front v-berth sleeps two adults and is over 6‘5" in length. Cooks will love the standard galley which includes a sink, refrigerator, inverter, microwave and a combination propane stove/oven. The marine head is standard with an electric flush toilet, glass vessel sink and shower.
