The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles and your County Tax Office handle Texas boat trailer registration. You'll also be required to title the trailer if it weighs more than 4,000 pounds. Trailers under that weight do not need to be titled. Different procedures apply depending on whether the trailer is manufactured or homemade.

Once you've finished registering your new boat with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, you'll need to head to the Department of Motor Vehicles to register your new boat trailer. Boat trailer registration is mandatory in Texas and requires an application form and proof of ownership.

If you built the boat trailer yourself or hired a shop to build it for you, you still have to register it. But first, get it inspected by an auto theft law enforcement officer. Ask at the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles for the location of the closest inspection center with an auto theft law enforcement officer. Take your trailer in for inspection and fill out an Application for Assigned or Reassigned Number (Form VTR-68-A). Once you are assigned a number, you must get it die-stamped on the trailer.

Take in your Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin (MCO) as well. Think of this document as your trailer's birth certificate. The MCO lists your Texas boat trailer's unique identification information. Every trailer manufacturer is legally obligated to provide an MCO to the person buying a vehicle or to the dealer selling the vehicle. more

If any of them are still in a previous owner's name then you'll have to track down that individual and have them sign the title over. Huge PITA. Make the seller do the leg work. Especially if he wants to make the sell. more

If the trailer is over 4000lbs gross weight a title is required.(boat trailers included)

A homemade or commercially constructed trailer with a gross vehicle weight of less than 4,000 lbs. does not need to be issued a Texas title, and can be registered with just a bill of sale. Gross vehicle weight is not the weight of the trailer itself, but the weight of the trailer and its maximum load. Usually, small single-axle utility trailers fall into this category.

In Texas, the Department of Motor Vehicles handles utility trailers differently depending on their capacity. A trailer with a gross weight of 4,000 pounds or less doesn't need to be titled, and you can transfer it with a simple bill of sale; but a trailer with a gross weight of over 4,000 pounds must be formally titled and registered at the DMV.

Larger trailers, with a gross vehicle weight of over 4,000 pounds, must be issued a Texas title like any other vehicle, and a bill of sale cannot be used to obtain the title. These include most boat trailers, the large-capacity trailers used by some rental or moving companies and trailers capable of carrying equipment or vehicles. [links]

Trailers from out of state weighing more than 4,500 lbs. must be issued a Texas title. An out-of-state title is one of the required documents, and a bill of sale cannot be substituted. Farm trailers weighing 4,000 lbs. or less do not need to be titled or registered; these can be sold with only a bill of sale. Farm trailers weighing more than 4,000 lbs. may be registered with a special farm plate, but do not need to be titled. Farm plates place specific restrictions on a trailer's use more

I bought my first boat while in high school 1981. I had more hours working on it than using it in the water. I can't count how many boats I've had since, but I really enjoy reviving boats. I've had so many boats that I could never use them all. Once I fix a boat up, I play with it a couple times and sell it. My goal is to use my many years of experience, and help as many people Begin Boating.

Having the ability to enjoy fishing from a bowrider boat, is a big deal. It allows you to use your family boat for fishing so you don't need to own two boats. Bowriders can be great.

I don’t use any of my “toys” in Illinois, with the exception of possibly once or twice a year with a boat. Wisconsin is just much nicer. Per Wisconsin regulations, if my boat trailer resides in Wisconsin more that 60% of the year, an out of state owner can title and plate it in Wisconsin. I use it there and do winter storage in Wisconsin. [links]

You must abide by the laws of the state in which you are using your boat trailer on the road. It doesn’t mean you will get a ticket. What it does mean, is that you are violating state law and you could get a ticket. more

Now from the perspective on the toys themselves, they’re not vehicles for the road. So the Wisconsin Department of Motor Vehicles is not involved. Remember, I don’t claim to own any real estate in Wisconsin, so there’s no tie to residency. (I do own rental real estate in Wisconsin, but that’s never brought up, nor would it matter.) here
