The motor will start and run fine but will die after only 10-15 seconds. If I can get it to run long enough to get in open water I can run flat out with no issues but as soon as I bring the rpm's back down to wakeless speed it dies again and is a bear to start back up. I've purged the entire fuel system by draining the tank, putting in new gas, and purging the fuel lines thru the filter, fuel pump, carb, taking apart carb including all the jets and cleaning it with no avail. With that being said I'm leaning towards an electrical issue? [links]
Hello all,
I've followed numerous threads and posts here trying to find the exact year of my outboard. Its a Mariner Thirty with a serial number stamp of "made in japan" 689 L 536303. I can't find this number on any of the available cross reference sites. Can anyone help? [links]
In the meantime - my 30 HP is 689407533, and is a 1982. So, I'd bet you are either 1982 or 1983 - which seem to be very similare w/regard to parts.
Determining when your Chrysler outboard motor was manufactured may be necessary when it is time for repairs or replacement parts. Chrysler is no longer in the outboard motor trade; in the 1980s, the government forced the sale of this division as part of their bailout plan. However, the outboard motors from that time are still available in the marketplace as used engines. The best method for identifying the year is by tracking the model number.

Click on the link for your engine on the "Model Year Index" menu, the links list by horsepower. For example, if your engine has a five horsepower motor, you would click on the link for "3.5 thru 9.2 HP." here
BRP will eliminate traditional model year designations for Evinrude outboard engines. Beginning in April 2012, model year designations will no longer be used. Instead, the date of manufacture will be referenced on the serial number label, located on each Evinrude outboard engine.
“BRP remains committed to the award-winning Evinrude E-TEC technology, and the model year elimination is consistent with current standards in the marine industry,” said Steve Laham, vice-president of Sales, Marketing and After-Sales, Evinrude. “By eliminating model year, consumers will be provided with product upgrades earlier without having to wait for the start of a new model year. Overall, this change will be positive for our customers, dealers and OEM partners worldwide.” here
The model year elimination will not affect the warranty of any Evinrude outboard engine, nor will it affect the resale or trade-in value of an outboard engine or boat package. In states that require a manufacturer’s statement of origin (MSO) for titling purposes, Evinrude will supply the appropriate MSO information to its dealer network. here
With this system, any models sharing the same code are physically identical, regardless of when they were built. Your Mercury dealer can help you identify the model code(s) on the engine(s) you are interested in and ensure you are getting the very latest product. This is also of particular importance if you are re-powering a boat with twin, triple, or quad engines. more
Mercury uses a code to identify each outboard model it produces. In the past, the second-to-last character in the code was used to identify model year. Because Mercury had a model year, that character within the code was automatically updated every 12 months. For example, a 1-225V23DD model code referred to a Mercury 225XL Verado and the "D" in the second-to-last position represented the 2005 model year.
For Mercury outboard engines invoiced to U.S. outboard customers as of June 30 2008, a field called "Program Year" will be added to the MSO form.
Why did Mercury eliminate model year designations for its outboard engines? here
