In order to ensure the timing is correct on a mechanical fuel injection pump, first rotate the engine to the top dead center (TDC) and engage the TDC timing pin with the camshaft gear. Then remove the timing pin access plug from the injection pump and verify if the slot in the pin will fit over the timing tooth of the pump. here

So why is a fuel injection pump and its timing important? The right amount of fuel and its timing are extremely critical because it regulates the combustion of fuel and the speed of the engine. Therefore, maintaining precise timing is important every time the timing belt of an engine has been replaced or adjusted. oneHOWTO shows you this by explaining how to check fuel pump injection timing.

There are also similar diesel engine problems which can lead to similar issues. If the fuel line is dirty, for example, then smoke might billow from the exhaust. This is why it is often important to go to a mechanic as our own diagnostic tests may not be sufficient. [links]

If it is an older diesel engine with a mechanical fuel injection pump, you will need to check for the type of crankshafts, pipes, cylinders, gears etc of your model. You should check before starting the work, as making adjustments to a fuel injection pump could present warranty voiding issues. more

Next, carefully replace the pump to correct the timing, adjusting and readjusting the timing pin and access plug in the injection pump. Lastly, disengage the timing pin from the camshaft gear. You may want to read more about when to replace your timing belt for more information. more

Loves and pilot/flying J's Have some of the worst quality fuel out there. Much higher biomass used, higher moisture content, and a lot of crap floating in there fuel. Just look at your fuel filter next time you replace it. [links]

Also, for every 5% of biomass you loose about 0.2mpg, it doesn't have the same lubricating properties as premium diesel does, and it gunks up your injectors.

I just put some Howes in once in a while. I've never had fuel related issues.

I used to run Power Service, but one time down in Indiana I had two injectors go on my Powerstroke pickup. Dealer down there couldn't get me in but told me I could get back home, it will just run crappy. So I stopped at a Flying J for fuel and bought a bottle of Howes. Ten minutes on the highway, my engine light went out and it ran perfect. So I stuck with Howes after that. more

Note: Cylinder No. 1 can be positioned on either the firing stroke or exhaust stroke. Both valves will be closed when cylinder number one is at TDC and the camshaft lobes will be positioned inward. [links]

  1. Disconnect the battery power.
  2. Install engine barring tool J-46392 to flywheel housing.
  3. Rotate the flywheel until the dot that is located inside the tooth is aligned with edge of pointer and install pin.
