I whipped a few test sections onto a section of bamboo cane, found some assorted pieces of plastic film to test their release properties, I mixed up some glue and tried it on one of my test sections. I wrapped this with waxed backing paper thinking this may work as a release agent but it failed, foil from a crisp packet worked best of the other samples I tested ,I think being slightly less flexible it gave a better finish but you can't see air bubble through it. So I opted for the heavy polyethylene from a zip lock freezer bag. [links]

I went to visit my Dad his old work box yielded the remains of a reel of yellow nylon and a reel of button thread which he assured me would work and as the nylon ran out I tried it and it did. I suspect braid fishing line will be up to the job, but I'll probably buy a new reel of coloured nylon next time I buy some eyes.
Double over the end of the thread. The loop wants to be somewhat longer than the length of rod you need to bind around. Secure the loop end to the rod in the middle of the guide with tape, it needs to be a low tack tape, masking tape or as I use paper surgical tape. This helps keep the loop flat if you let it twist as you are doing the binding it makes it much harder to pull under the binding when finishing off and it looks messier. The free end wants to be below the point that needs binding. more

Quite how the first guide on this rod got to be in this state no one seems to know. It was only a cheap rod, but even so with a new guide costing £3+p&p it had to be worth trying if only for the practice. I got my new eyes from

They also sell whipping thread sealing epoxy and by the looks of things anything else you need to repair or build a fishing rod at a price!

Recheck your alignment, at this point you can still tweak the position of the guide, or remove the binding and start again. [links]

Zip ties are incredibly useful for fishing with a baited line in general. The semi-rigid plastic can be used to hold your hook in the correct position. [links]

In the ‘50s, airplane manufacturers were beginning to have a problem. Aircraft were getting longer and bigger. They were increasing their carrying capacity and, with it, the electric wiring needed to adequately power the numerous devices and services aboard.

The going system to organize the thousands of feet of wire involved laying it down on 50’ plywood boards and holding it in place with braided nylon cord. Engineers hand to hand-tie each of these by wrapping them tightly around their fingers. Doing that a couple hundred times per plane would often cut their skin until they developed thick callouses, or ‘hamburger hands.’

As your bait travels through the water any jostling can flip your hook into your bait, rendering it as ineffective as judo in a backyard throw down. But if you zap your strap through a hole in which you would normally run your hook and concurrently run your hook through you strap, you can hold your hook firmly to your bait without any danger of it rearranging itself. Muddyrivercatfishing gives some insight into this trick. [links]

Many go an entire lifetime without knowing of or being involved in a drowning. Unfortunately, I've been personally affected by two drownings in recent years. A year ago, an older gentleman died in my arms after falling into the water. And just last week, I lost my close fishing buddy after he drowned while bass fishing.

Most reputable tournament organizations worth their salt have a mandatory rule to have life jackets on and buttoned up anytime the big engine is running and the kill switch must be attached to the driver. It's second nature and is just something we know and do without thinking. Most organizations, however, allow anglers to remove them when they are fishing.

Many anglers believe that the Palomar knot is the strongest of fishing knots. It is also as easy as the Clinch knot. But the perk of a Palomar knot is that, if needed, you can tie this knot in the dark or even with your eyes closed. more
