Wax additive is added to the final layer of gelcoat (without wax) or to the polyester laminating resin (without wax) on the final layer of a wet layup to produce a tack-free surface, and allow the material to cure to a hard finish. When you’re building up the layers in a wet layup application, you don’t want wax in the polyester resin because you want the layers to bond chemically, resulting in a stronger bond. It’s only the final layer that needs wax additive in order to cure. The wax creates an air barrier so the resin can cure to a tack-free state ready for sanding and finishing.

The chart below indicates how much additive to add to wax-free gelcoat or polyester resin. Avoid using too much wax as it will result in fish eye and other undesirable results. more

This additive contains paraffin and styrene. When adding it to gelcoat, you must also add the MEKP (methyl ethyl ketone peroxide) hardener.

Gelcoat is available with or without wax. To cure properly and completely, gelcoat needs to be devoid of oxygen.

Gelcoat without wax is used when you have a different method selected to cure it. Gelcoat without wax is commonly used for laminating gelcoat in stages, or when applied onto a waxed mold, where fiberglass (or another reinforcing fabric) saturated in polyester resin is laminated onto the unwaxed gelcoat. Other products such as PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) can also be applied over gelcoat without wax to cure it. PVA is commonly applied by brush or spraying. here

Gelcoat with wax has had paraffin wax added to it. When the gelcoat is catalyzed with MEKP, the wax rises to the surface throughout the cure, keeps the air from contacting the gelcoat, and allows the gelcoat to fully cure. If catalyzed with MEKP, gelcoat with wax will cure completely, in normal application conditions. more

Gelcoat without wax, or any other air dry product that has been catalyzed with MEKP, will generally harden, but remain sticky. More gelcoat or polyester resin can be applied directly over this and still form a chemical bond while it still has a tacky feel. All of this material will remain tacky until it is no longer in contact with the air.

Adjust the catalyst level to slow down or speed up gel time. Cooler temperatures may require a higher percentage of catalyst than warmer temperature conditions.

Our premium, high-viscosity marine gelcoat is non-sagging, and super strong. In fact, its ISO/NPG (Isophthalic/Neopentyl Glycol) resins are considerably more durable than standard, orthophthalic resin formulas. TotalBoat marine gel coat can be colored prior to adding catalyst. Adding color to Neutral gel coat produces bold or dark colors; adding color to a white gelcoat creates lighter, pastel colors.

Proper catalyzation is imperative for proper cure when using polyester. The higher the percentage of hardener, the faster the gelcoat will dry. Because air and surface temperatures also affect the drying of gelcoat, take care not to over-catalyze or under-catalyze. Do not add less than 1% catalyst or greater than 3% catalyst. We recommend a trial batch to determine final catalyst ratio.
