Mounting it on the starboard side makes it easier to run the cable to the unit on the starboard side console. more

the turbulance from the prop determines which side you mount your transducer on.

Secondly, does it matter which way your transducer faces? So the short answer is that no, it doesn't matter which way you face the "front" of your transducer.. the read out is going to look just the same to you. You do, however, want the BOTTOM of your transducer to face as straight down as you can, within reason. more

Can you have 2 transducers side by side?

A quick way to check if the transmitter stage & transducer are working is to feel the face of the transducer with the sounder running, you should be able to feel the pulses, or hear the transducer ticking.

Also to know, will a transducer work out of water?

The best way to check this is to have someone go over the side and take a look at the transducer to check for growth of grass, barnacles or worse. If that isn't possible, take the depth sounder to your local service dealer and have it checked out on the bench. There are good test sets for the purpose of checking out transmitter power output and receiver sensitivity. This will help you determine if it is the unit or the transducer.

In years past there has been much discussion about loss of sensitivity after painting transducers. While you might be able to measure this loss in a laboratory, it is insignificant compared to the loss from two months worth of barnacles on the face of your transducer. Some people will also tell you that it's OK to install a transducer inside a hull which has a coat of paint on the outside. That adds up to a heavy fiberglass hull, metallic bottom paint, a layer of adhesive and then maybe the signal will come out the other side. I'd rather not, thank you. more

You suddenly realize that on each of your last few trips, your fishfinder seems a little weaker. The gain needs to be turned up a little more. There's more noise than you've experienced previously and fish are harder to see. here

There are many things that can affect the sensitivity of your fishfinder, such as a transducer going bad, the transmitter losing power, corroded connections on the unit, or even just barnacles growing on the bottom of the transducer. While you still might be able to see the bottom reasonably well for navigating purposes, any loss of signal return can be a real detriment to catching fish. more

Think of a transducer as your fishfinder’s mouth and ears. It shouts into the depths with its “ping,” and then listens for the echo. The type of transducer you use will have a tremendous impact on how your fishfinder performs, yet we tend to take the stock unit that comes with a fishfinder and assume it’s best for our uses. Bad move. Here’s why.

The size of the “crystals” in a transducer determine how well it will work. These crystals are actually piezoceramic elements (a polarized barium titanate or lead zarconate titanate disk or ring, coated in silver), which both create and detect vibrations. The larger they are, the louder they shout—and the better they can listen. In fact, when other factors such as output power and receiver quality remain the same, doubling the transducer crystal’s diameter has the exact same effect as quadrupling the fishfinder’s output power. So obviously, upgrading to a larger transducer can pay big dividends. more

Shoot-throughs result in a significant loss of power, and should be avoided unless you want a mere depth gauge. here
