As Japanese engine builders continued their strategy to reinforce that they were making the smoothest, quietest, cleanest, and most fuel-efficient engines available. Evinrude was actually doing it rather than talking about it. more
Outboard Marine Corp. the parent company of Evinrude/Johnson along with many very well known boat manufacturers were struggling with management problems and financial issues.
Also look closely at the California Air Resources Board “Star” rating on the motor you are considering. ALL Evinrude E-TEC engines are Three Star rated. But not all four-strokes are. The less Stars the less efficient. And do yourself a favor and read the section “Are you getting what you pay for?” above.

Turn-Key Starting: Refers to engines that start without the need of priming, usually associated with Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) and Direct Fuel Injection (DFI).

Single Overhead Cam: A four cycle engine design whereby a single camshaft to actuate the intake and exhaust valves is located above the cylinder heads. This camshaft is bell driven by the crankshaft, and it provides more efficient operation by eliminating friction robbing components associated with conventional camshaft designs (i.e. push rods, etc) thereby allowing for maximum horsepower or output. DFI (Direct Fuel Injection): A technology whereby a precisely shaped charge of fuel is injected directly into each cylinder through the top of the cylinder head rather than at the point
There was some prop ventilation in hard-over figure of eights whereas none occurred with the Johnson, but quickly trimming in the motor cured most of this.
Opening the throttle provided smooth, progressive power with no hesitation as is sometimes the case with carbie engines. [links]
At the time of writing, therefore, it is somewhat more expensive than its rivals. For example, the Honda BF50 retails for 17% less.
Being a premium product, the Evinrude 50 (and 70) is unlikely to be discounted a move even more likely now that Suzuki has withdrawn from the Australian marine marketplace.
For a larger craft however I am all for the economy of a four stroke. Of course when you factor in the value of the motor it would take a while for the fuel savings to balance out the cost of the motor. [links]

I am on the hunt for a used boat, and would prefer a 4 Stroke Outboard if possible. Not sure my budget will get me one, but I'm going to try anyway. Wondering around what year this became more standard.
Short of a real answer I'd say the big push towards 4 strokes happened within the last 10 years. I feel like in the 90's and into the 2000's the 2 strokes with fancy oil injections that bring the mix above 100/1 were all the rage. I'm not talking about mixing pumps, I'm talking systems where oil is strategically injected. I personally have been turned into a crotchety old man who harps on new technology. I'll take a two stroke from the 80's or older and pre mix the fuel. I just can't stomach the price of newer outboards, and I know how to fix them (older ones). more
