Even though Edward Teach’s piracy lasted only two years, he left an oversized reputation in his wake. The 1952 film Blackbeard the Pirate brought his story to new audiences in the 20th century, and the 2011 movie Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides also featured the notorious pirate.

It was instantly clear that Blackbeard had superior firepower. But Maynard had a sharper wit. As the Adventure pulled alongside the Jane — the commander, second-in-command, and third-in-command on the Ranger had already been killed — Maynard ordered his men below deck. more

By late 1718, Blackbeard had begun to slow down. He’d scuttled Queen Anne’s Revenge in Beaufort Inlet, North Carolina — perhaps to cut down his crew — and traveled to Ocracoke Island on a sloop called Adventure. [links]

Brooks suspects that Edward Teach was born in Bristol, but was then brought to Jamaica at a young age. Many Europeans flocked to the Caribbean island in hopes of making it rich in the sugar industry. here

Blackbeard didn’t know it yet, but a British naval lieutenant named Robert Maynard was hot on his tail. Spotswood had enlisted Maynard to take care of Blackbeard — and Maynard was determined to finish the job. here

Pirates hoisted the skull-and-bones flag to show what their prey could expect if they resisted capture. The flags could also be plain black or plain red without any pictures—everyone knew what they meant. more

Other historians have recently noted that despite Blackbeard’s terrible reputation, no evidence exists that he ever killed anyone before his final battle at Ocracoke, near Cape Hatteras, when he was fighting for his life. “He likely cultivated that murderous image,” says Charles Ewen, an archaeologist at East Carolina University. “Scaring people was a better option than to damage what you are trying to steal.” here
This pirate, according to a British account written a half-dozen years after his death, “frightened America more than any comet that has appeared there [for] a long time.” But Blackbeard vanished abruptly when a British naval expedition personally funded by Virginia Governor Alexander Spotswood ambushed him and most of his men in a bloody battle off Ocracoke Island on November 22, 1718. Blackbeard’s head was stuck on a piling off Hampton, Virginia, as a warning to other lawbreakers.
The recent archaeological finds coupled with Brooks’ research may make Blackbeard “even more enigmatic,” says Kenyon. He is no longer the cardboard villain of the past, but his personality and motives are still unclear. “He continues to be so elusive. There are so many facets to this person. That’s what makes him fascinating.

Only in the past few years have genealogists, historians and archaeologists, thanks to a combination of hard work and good luck, unearthed surprising clues that reveal the man behind the legend, one that Blackbeard himself helped spawn. In his day, merchants whispered his name in fright. Reports circulated of a large man with “fierce and wild” eyes who kept a brace of three pistols on a holster across his chest and a tall fur cap on his head. Lighted matches made his luxurious beard smoke “like a frightful meteor.”

Thanks to the B-movie side of the SyFy channel, there have been all kinds of weird sharks: sand sharks, two-headed sharks, even sharks in a hurricane but Disney showed what happens when sharks come back as ghosts. Javier Bardem's Capitan Salazar sends three of these ghost sharks to kill Jack Sparrow. more

Usually, the evil crews are pirates but in this movie, Salazar and his crew are pirate hunters. With a personal vendetta against Jack Sparrow. These hunters died in the Devil's Triangle, cursing them to become ghosts. Though they cannot step on land, they are a force to be reckoned with. here

He even is willing to have his own daughter die to obtain immortality. Combined with an eerie performance from Ian McShane, Blackbeard proved to be a standout villain in an otherwise lackluster entry of the series. more

Blackbeard heads across Whitecap Bay in search of the Fountain Of Youth. Of course, nothing is ever easy in Pirates Of The Caribbean, so the bay is under the watch of mermaids. At first, they seem like playful, flirtatious, and beautiful creatures of the sea but they turn out to be even more deadly than the zombies they are fighting.
