That's what feeler gauges are for.
readjust your crank sensor to about .035" for best results and leave it there. It has nothing to do with your starter operation. here
First off it sounds like something wrong in your starter. The mtr should spin over everytime even if the cps was disconnected. As far as your cps goes it should have a gray sleeve on it. The gap between it and the flywheel should be between .045"-.055". It should have 350-450 ohms at 74*. If you check it with an ohmmeter wiggle the wires when doing so.
So how in the heck do I measure the gap on the cps? There is a peep hole on the flywheel cover that gives me a visual ref, but I can't imagine being able to measure the gap through it. Guessing to the thousandth of an inch is a bit much for these tired eyes! [links]
