Henry and Carina’s motives are in keeping with the Pirates series’ hallmarks of family, revenge and redemption, and love and curses. Brenton Thwaites and Kaya Scodelario try to develop a chemistry between their respective characters and with Jack, but Henry and Carina’s romance feels forced and unearned. It plays out as an obligatory add-on to a story that would work just the same without it. here

Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow and the film’s new young leads, sailor Henry and astronomer Carina, all take turns at driving the plot that it becomes tough to discern whose story this ultimately is. All three, as well as the villainous Captain Salazar, seek the Trident of Poseidon for their own reasons, but this only splits the focus on which character we’re supposed to be most invested in seeing attain it. On top of that, Geoffrey Rush’s Captain Hector Barbossa is also back in the mix and playing a pivotal enough role that his choices affect the storyline as much as the main trio does. So, again, who is steering this ship?

While they are a stronger duo for Jack to interact with than On Stranger Tides’ unconvincing missionary and mermaid, and their respective arcs do lend the film some genuine moments of heart and emotion, the series has never quite regained the dynamic that Jack enjoyed with the original trilogy’s Elizabeth Swann and Will Turner. Bloom and Knightley were simply more charming together and their characters more engaging than any of the couplings the films have offered since.

Javier Bardem’s ghoulish pirate hunter Salazar never amounts to much more than a sight gag, and not a terribly impressive one at that, as the digitally altered ghost sailors all look dodgy. The first movie’s visual effects look better and that film is fourteen years old. There is also just not that much of a character for Bardem to play, and the Oscar winner never gets a truly great, villainous moment for the audience to relish seeing him be bad. And after witnessing so many supernatural enemies and sea creatures over the past four films, a ghost crew proves a surprisingly tepid and uninspired menace here. The undead sharks Jack and Henry fight at one point have more bite than this retread on the first film’s baddies. [links]

Captain Jack Sparrow isn't always the main character of a Pirates of the Caribbean movie, but he is always an important one. At the end of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, Jack (Johnny Depp) had lost the Black Pearl to Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) for the second time, but he successfully kept the navigational charts that led him to the Fountain of Youth. While he never got to drink from the Fountain during On Stranger Tides, he did successfully escape Blackbeard alongside his stalwart first mate Gibbs, and with his compass and the Black Pearl in his possession, sort of.

Barbossa has had the wildest ride of any character within the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. When we met him, he was the captain of the Black Pearl and its crew of cursed men. While Barbossa was killed when the curse was broken, he was brought back to life via the magic of Calypso the sea god, in order to help bring back Jack Sparrow. After stealing the Black Pearl back from Jack, he lost it, and his leg, to Blackbeard, at which point he became an official privateer for the British government. When last we saw Barbossa, he was heading back to a life of piracy. He's in control of Blackbeard's old ship, the Queen Anne's Revenge as well as the magic that makes it work. Who knows where he will go from here. more

The Black Pearl is one of the most famous ships afloat on the Spanish Main. Its speed is unmatched and Jack Sparrow sold his soul in order to be its Captain. Unfortunately, Sparrow had a tendency to lose his ship to Captain Barbossa. His former first mate took the Pearl away at the end of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, but then Barbossa lost the ship in turn to Blackbeard, who magically shrunk the vessel and added it to his collection of ships in bottles. Blackbeard died at the end of the film, so there was no known way to bring the Pearl back. Jack Sparrow got his ship back, now he just needs to find a way to get it back to size. There does appear to be some likelihood of success, however. Keep reading. more

Born the daughter of the governor of Port Royal, Elizabeth Swann's life took a serious turn after she was kidnapped by Barbossa and the crew of the Black Pearl. Of course, Elizabeth Swann was rarely the damsel in distress. She was taught to use a sword by Will Turner, made the captain of a ship, became one of the nine pirate lords when previous lord Sao Feng died, and thanks to Jack Sparrow, Elizabeth was made Pirate King of the Brethren Court, where she made the decision to fight the East India Trading Co. She married Will Turner only minutes before he was killed by Davy Jones and then transformed into the new captain of the Flying Dutchman. She then spent Will's only day on land for 10 years with him, an encounter that produced a son. here

Despite the somewhat less-than-welcoming reception offered the last two films in the franchise (On Stranger Tides and Dead Men Tell No Tales), Disney is still planning on going ahead with a sixth swashbuckling entry, reportedly in the form of a reboot. No title has yet been revealed, but the script is well underway with screenwriter Ted Elliott, who has worked on the previous films. Joining him on writing duties Craig Mazin, the man who created the hit HBO miniseries Chernobyl.

Now, however, it seems Disney has perhaps changed their mind. We Got This Covered reported in March of 2020 that rumors suggested the studio may be hoping to convince Depp to return as everyone's favorite rum-drinking pirate captain after all. We'll have to wait and see how that plays out, but in the meantime, what about Depp's co-pirate, Orlando Bloom? more

As the story continues to come together behind closed doors, it sounds like the studio is pretty deep in consideration when it comes to casting options. In 2018, it appeared that a serious rift had formed between the studio and Captain Jack Sparrow himself, Johnny Depp, regarding the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean film. This break, naturally, came after Depp and his ex-wife Amber Heard's divorce turned very ugly with allegations of abuse from both parties. Even as he continued to appear in high-profile projects like the Fantastic Beasts movies, public perception of Depp's career hit a low point that called his big-screen future into question. more

Bloom played the blacksmith-turned-pirate Will Turner in the original Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy. His story saw him falling in love and later marrying Elizabeth Swan (Kiera Knightley) during the climactic battle in At World's End after a failed attempt at tying the knot in Dead Man's Chest. The third movie's conclusion saw Will doomed to take Davy Jones' place as cursed captain of the Flying Dutchman, leaving his wife (and the child he didn't realize he was about to have) behind on dry land. He returned for a short appearance in the fifth film, Dead Men Tell No Tales, in which his now grown son Henry Turner (Brenton Thwaites) fights to free him from the Flying Dutchman. here
