Immature blue marlin feed on a variety of zooplankton and drifting fish eggs and larvae. Once mature, the blue marlin progresses to feeding on a wide range of fish such as mackerel, tuna, squid and juvenile inshore fish. They use their bill to stun or spear their prey and have even been recorded taking quarry of white marlin and tuna as large as 100lbs.
When we hook up to a marlin we always try to tag it. We have a special tag stick and tags registered with The Billfish Foundation. Once tagged we record particulars about the fish such as its size, condition and the location where we caught him and then we release the fish unharmed. When the fish is re-caught, the tag will be reported back to The Billfish Foundation’s team. They are able to gather invaluable information about the species’ range and migratory patterns, growth and more – information vital to the conservation and continuation of these amazing creatures. here
