I said it even before the '21 Prostar came out, but is even more relevant since. more

They lost me when they shrink wrapped the boat in the tan seadeck! more

I’ll never get over the looks although I’m sure it’s the smoothest quietest easiest driving best fit and finish most solid boat out there, by far, because Nautique is in another league entirely there undeniably, not up for debate. Just can’t do it on the looks and amount of Seadek. The Seadek polygonal insanity.

Epic fail? No Nautique did exactly what they wanted with this boat. Make the boat complicated with state of the art up to date technology. Provide styling that is out of this world. Price the boat out of reach of the general competitive waterskier. Dealers would not order ski boats because of the slim profit margins. Now build a complicated pricey boat the margins get better.
They only want to build a limited number of units and they are holding to it. [links]

OH! I have news: I got a transmission. It is sitting in my garage waiting to be spun by a V-8 beast. 🙂 here

Today I was writing an email and started a list of what I need to do to finish up this project and start to ski. Sometimes I feel like the list is getting longer, but I’ll just keep plugging away: here

Last night I had a dream that I got a new engine and the boat ran great. David and his friend Erik went wake boarding and then we hung out on the lake for a while while Steve swam near the boat. When I woke up I was really happy that the boat was all finished. Of course, once I figured out it was just a dream I was somewhat disappointed, but the feelings from that dream keep me motivated to keep working at it. more

In the last month I have been picking apart the purple Tree-Nautique (as I have come to call the tree-damaged boat I purchased). Some of the parts on this boat are duplicates of parts I already own so I’ve been selling what I don’t need. Note for all my readers: If you’d like to get a lot of email, just mention in the right places on the internet that you are parting out an early 90’s Ski Nautique. So far I’ve only sold roughly a dozen parts. Largest item has been the windshield, and the smallest a couple of hinges. The most common ask is for the control throttle, which had already been removed from the boat when I got it.

Correct.
The neighbor put their supra in (without the plug) and then drove it to the dock. Tied it up and put the cover on. The next morning it was still floating with just the gunnel above the water here

BTW, the Mayflower didn't have any foam because it was wood! Another plus for owning a wood boat!! here

Can you imagine the hot tingly feeling you would get when you first saw that? [links]

Getting back to your engineering, water weighing 62 lbs. per cu. ft. and deducting the weight of the 2 lb. per cu. ft. typically used, then the one cu. ft. of foam will displace 60 lbs. of weight when the boat is swamped. more

Steve,
It's primary purpose is flotation although some will say it's also for adding some structural strength to the hull between the stingers. I personally don't feel it adds much especially seeing what the condition it's in when it breaks down and not seeing hull damage. There's also the sound factor but many will say they didn't notice any difference without the foam. My Tique isn't foamed and I don't think it's any noisier than a foamed hull.

Phase 10: Complete assembly and enjoy a brand new boat

Phase 2: Removed the floor, the floor stringers and flotation foam
I used a skill saw and sawzall primarly to remove the floor and outer stringers. It was an awful lot of work to say the least. I also found loads of water sitting beneath the floor thanks to voids in the floatation foam. 20 years of slow leaks created a mess. The outer stringers are primarily for floor support, unlike the center which provide primary hull integrity and the drivetrain stabilization.

All in all, the boat came out even better than we'd hoped it would. We wet sanded the gelcoat (another project here) and added new decals to tie in the shiny new hull and modern structure underneath.

Phase 8: The motor and transmission was reinstalled on the new stringers and re-alligned. This time no bolt penetrated the double wrapped fiberglass wood, without being sealed in epoxy.

Phase 3: Removed the engine and transmission
The motor and transmission were unbolted and removed from the boat. The driveshaft, which was new, was left as it lay. From here all the extra floor and floor stringers and tabs were cut or ground out using hand tools and sanded. This was messy and required air respirator filters. more

Phase 6: Rebuilt the Floors using composite material and "plexus" epoxy
The floors were made from the same materials current Malibu boats use, "Space Age Materials" which is marketing mumbo jumbo for composite. This stuff is 100% waterproof, strong and lightweight. Instead of unprotected screws and staples from the original build, this time the floors were attached using plexus epoxy for a permanent bond without leaving holes in the floor. [links]
