In this case, your engine can be tilted or vertical with the propeller removed. You’ll find the built-in flushing device, which is a hose fitting, located near the lower rear cowling. Connect the hose to the flushing device fitting and turn on the faucet. Let the freshwater run through the motor for 15 minutes. When it’s complete, turn off the faucet and disconnect it. Place the cap back on the flush fitting as instructed in your owner’s manual.

If you opt for the flush bag method, your engine must be in a vertical position and in neutral for 15 minutes. Remove the propeller, screw your hose into the connector on the bag, and start filling it up. The water pump needs to be fully submerged, so make sure the water level is as high as possible above the cooling water inlets on the lower unit. here

Start the outboard and again set the throttle to no more than a fast idle of 800 to 900 RPM max. Keep your eye on the water coming out of the pilot tube at the lower rear of the cowling. If you need to, you can increase the water flow. You should notice water exiting the back of the gearcase. Run the engine for 15 minutes. Finish by stopping the engine and turning off the faucet.

Did you know that flushing is an essential component of proper outboard motor maintenance? In fact, you should be flushing after each use. This might seem excessive but when you take into account the fact that whenever you run your Yamaha outboard motor, the intake ports are exposed to salt and brackish water as well as sand, chemicals, minerals, grass particles, and more. You may not realize it but all of these can end up damaging your motor’s cooling system in the long run.

So, how do you go about flushing Yamaha outboards? There are a few different methods you can choose from. Whether you choose to use the built-in flushing attachment, a flush bag, or flush muffs. While all of these methods will get the job done, there are some factors to consider when choosing how to go about it. here

Start your Yamaha outboard motor and set the throttle to no more than a fast idle. Do not exceed 800 to 900 RPM. Allow it to run for approximately 15 minutes, then stop the engine and turn off the faucet. Before you start the engine again, turn the freshwater on. Keep in mind it’ll take around 30 seconds to fill the water passages before it exits the pilot tube. here

Probably not that easy with an OX66 - but you do have time. If you can find a friend to remove the engine - store it upside down and let time and penetrating spray have at it! Salt water is so tough on stuff. [links]

I am considering purchasing another thermostat covering and attaching a male hose bib attachment to the covering so I can flush the upper portion of the cooling passages with the pump. I put the thermostat coverings in vinegar for 30 minutes, which didn't do much for dissolving scale, but the rock hard scale was soft after the soak and easily removed with a screwdriver and dental pick. I'm going to use Hammerhead descaler the next time.

Still can't get the lower unit off. I tried everything. It'll have to stay on till the impeller needs changing. Then I guess I 'll have to cut a hole in the side of the mid-casing and sawzall the driveshaft in half. Wonderful. more

I'd also close off (tape) the pisser (at least for a little while), just to keep more water/Rydlem in the power head.

You may not mess with it this year, but I'd soak it, can't hurt. here

I was going to say something similar, but that seemed way to obvious to consider.
Are there Remote/Trailer Trim buttons on the transom?

Did you pull the cowling to make sure no water was spraying around under there with motor running? here

Does anyone know why this is?? Guess I'll have to get a big bucket??

Doesn't that engine have a connector that will allow you to screw the water hose directly to the engine thus negating the need for the muffs? Is this boat new to you?
