Following the global media launch of the luxury yacht in September, four units have been sold to date, with three destined for Florida and the fourth to Japan. The Lexus LY 650, built by Marquis Yachts, is a maritime vessel that was influenced by the luxury car maker by incorporating both brands’ passions for innovation and craftsmanship.

Lexus has released renderings of the LY650, its first proper production boat. Dubbed ‘the third Lexus flagship’, LY stands for Luxury Yacht, linking it to the flagship LS (Luxury Saloon) and LC (Luxury Coupé) range of cars. The 650 refers to its length, which at 65ft 5in keeps the LOA pegged to just under 20 metres.

“I’m usually quite sceptical about car firms building boats,” says Hugo Andreae, editor of MBY, “But the Lexus LY650 is a little different because the Japanese brand have the money and determination to succeed as well as a peerless reputation for customer service. It is also using a well-established boat yard to actually build it.” [links]
The LY 650's styling was cooperatively penned with Nuvolari Lenard, which designs luxury yachts. Lexus and its partners designed the LY 650 with a high-tech hull that's a combination of lightweight but rigid CFRP (carbon fiber-reinforced plastic) and GFRP (glass fiber-reinforced plastic), to reduce weight without sacrificing structural integrity. The LY 650 is powered by dual Volvo Penta IPS1350 marine engines making 1,000 horsepower each, or buyers can choose 800 or 900 hp engines instead. more
Lexus is taking its pursuit of luxury lifestyle offshore with a production version of its LY 650 yacht, revealed in Boca Raton last week. Now one can have an oceangoing Lexus to go with the LC 500 parked in the garage.

The seven yachts that will be unveiled for the very first time at the boat show emphasize the direction the yachting industry is taking: increasingly technologically advanced vessels that still maintain an air of luxury. Some were designed with jet propulsion mechanisms while others were designed to function in all climates — but all were created with grandeur in mind. [links]
Now in its 60th year, the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show has established itself as the biggest in-water boat show in the world. With credentials like that, it's no wonder several boats will be making their world debut at the show, which will take place from October 30 through November 3. [links]
Over the course of five days, an estimated 110,000 attendees will flock to South Florida where 1,500 boats will be on display, over 100,000 glasses of beer will be consumed, and $508 million will change hands in the name of yachting. [links]
