The Fuel Sending Unit is responsible for sending an electrical signal to the fuel gauge to indicate the level of fuel in your tank. The fuel sending unit uses a variable resistance to generate the variable electric current to indicate the fuel level. The mechanism consists of a foam float that is connected to a thin, metal rod. The end of the metal rod is connected to the variable resistor. A wiper, that slides on the metal strip, is connected to the gauge and conducts electricity from the gauge to the resistor. When the tank is full, the wiper is closest to the ground and the resistance is at the minimum while the current is at its maximum, therefore making the gauge indicate the tank is "full".

When the fuel level becomes low, the float begins to drop, moving the metal arm. Thus, the wiper begins to move away from the ground, introducing more resistance into the circuit, and decreasing the current flowing through the gauge. Thus as the fuel level drops, the gauge needle begins creeping towards the "Empty" indicator. Though, it's a conventional module, there are innacuracies associated with this system. Owing to the fact that the fuel level indication is dependent on the position of the floating ball, the indications of a full and empty tank on the gauge is not consistent with the actual level of fuel in the tank. more

If you find that your fuel gauge indicator seems to be stuck in a single position, full or empty, it could be an indication of short circuit or defect in wiring of the sending unit. If the gauge sticks in one position and returns to normal after a little while, it is likely due to a mechanical fault in the float arm. In either of the above mentioned cases, you should check your fuel sending unit. At Buy Auto Parts we stock a wide variety of fuel sending units for every car make and model. more

You rely on your fuel gauge every time you drive your car. If your fuel gauge doesn't work or isn't accurate, it should be a priority to repair it. Your fuel sending unit is a fuel level sensor inside your gas tank that measures the amount of fuel in the tank. The sending unit is submerged in fuel, which can cause it to wear out over time. Corrosion, wiring problems, and wear and tear can all damage a fuel sending unit. O'Reilly Auto Parts offers fuel sending units for a variety of vehicles. Find a sending unit designed to fit your vehicle to complete your repair.

As the title says, my fuel sending unit is acting up. To make a long story short, today i pulled out my pump/sending unit and am going to perform a resistance test to determine if the issue is the sending unit. (my gas gauge works fine till half a tank, then it gets stuck at half a tank till i fill it up past half) Anyways, i haven't had much experience with sending units, but i did notice something looked odd so ill add a picture of it. This plastic top piece is supposed to be attached to the bottom correct? When i removed the unit, all the weight of the pump was on the electrical wires. here
