As Joe S. pointed out in the previous post, fuel filter condition can be monitored on an older EMD unit by observing the fuel sight glasses on top of the filter mounting bracket (Electronic fuel system units don't have these glasses). I would like to point out, however, that the filters mentioned (which appear similar to an automobile oil filter, only longer) are in series with, and second-in-line to the primary fuel filter, a much larger filter located in a housing separate from the engine. If the smaller secondary (or "spin-on") filters are plugging, it is highly likely the primary filter is already plugged and bypassing. When the spin-ons are plugged, it is our policy to change the primary filter as well. here
