How common are fuel line problems--clogged filters, valves, strainers, poor injector performance, fuel preheater problems, in locomotive operation? How often do fuel line problems other than the fuel pump itself reduce engine performance or require shutting down a unit? more
As Joe S. pointed out in the previous post, fuel filter condition can be monitored on an older EMD unit by observing the fuel sight glasses on top of the filter mounting bracket (Electronic fuel system units don't have these glasses). I would like to point out, however, that the filters mentioned (which appear similar to an automobile oil filter, only longer) are in series with, and second-in-line to the primary fuel filter, a much larger filter located in a housing separate from the engine. If the smaller secondary (or "spin-on") filters are plugging, it is highly likely the primary filter is already plugged and bypassing. When the spin-ons are plugged, it is our policy to change the primary filter as well. here
The Paragon pumps have an AC converter there in the electronics, so they run on a brushless induction motor. [links]
If I understand correctly, none of the newer systems have a "glass" so you can see the fuel sluicing around, but the newer GE units have a fuel pressure indicator in the cab so you can tell whether that part of the system is having problems. Do the newer EMD units have indicators in the cab that report the condition of the fuel system also?
98%of the time, your "missing float and rod" are chugging around like a Texaco Tanker up inside the tank (unless someone already fished it out, and lost it). More than likely, you can find it and retrieve it through the tank filler cap. Then you will have to remove the whole gauge from it's well in the tank bottom and rebuild it. This will require less than ten bux worth of parts (plus whatever "labor"); slightly more if you find you need to replace the isinglass sight glass tube. The whole unit is still available new and complete from Univair for just about $200, including shipping charges. Did you CALL Univair and ask about the parts you need, or did you just "not find them" in their catalog? If they still sell the whole unit, they should at Least know where you can get them. [links]
Gilbert; Is that possibly a typo (Me of all people would easily understand about typos!) or should that be Dwg 12538 and the "lined out" detail view Fig 8 thereon? The Piper Dwg No. 12438 that I have is for a Piper Muffler Baffle Plate Assembly undt that doesn't help much with the sight glass problem. (But it IS a much nicer quality reproduction!) more

WagAero used to sell all the "little parts" AND the whole unit, but I haven't seen one of their catalogs for a couple years now, and so I dunno if they still have them. Might be worth a little Main Office browsing time to check them out as well (?). more
