What to look out for is one or two cylinders that compress more than 10% below the rest. If all 6 are within a 10% span the engine is probably healthy mechanically.

I'm new to the forum. I'm looking for some advice/help with a potential boat purchase. I'm looking to purchase a new boat with a 2002 200hp Optimax with roughly 490 hours. I have compression info.

Lastly, total hours don't seem all that high but I'm interested in others perspectives. Again, my non-mechanic rule of thumb I've heard is that most 2-stroke outboards should have a normal life expectancy of 1500-2000 hours (equivalent of 100k miles on a car). Obviously there are many flavors - some guys blow a powerhead in 100 hours and others run the same motor w/o major repair for 2500+. here

As mentioned earlier, testing the compression of all 8 cylinders is one of the most overlooked troubleshooting tests. But, before jumping into this test, you should first verify that the misfire is not spark related.

1) Which one to buy: The engine compression tester that I have always used is the Actron CP7827 Compression Tester Kit. My only complaint about this engine compression tester is that it does not come with a case to store it in.

Once the needle stops climbing, have your helper stop cranking the engine. Repeat this test twice, and record the second reading on a piece of paper. [links]

NOTE: The engine should NOT be HOT (normal operating temperature) and yet, it should be not be COLD. So, if you've just turned off the engine, after an extended run time, let it cool down about 30 minutes. If the engine is cold, start’er up and let’er run about 15 minutes. If the engine in your vehicle doesn't start, then don't worry about it being warm or not for the test, since a compression test can still be done. more
