So when I get back from Chicago come over and lets put one together with this new high tech material that you can drop from 30,000 feet with no damage and should yeild a surfboard that weights in a 4.13 pounds for a 6'1" x 18 1/2" x 2 1/4". With a flex ratio equal to PU/PU. This is all in theory so I need to prove it. This will be an alternative to standard board production, however would like to do 4 at a time. I'm sure Todd has this already figured out? The PU/PE is working so well however looking for the longentivy without the stiffness! [links]

All these recent vacuum bagging posts have got me wanting to give it a try.
Has anyone used the Harbor Freight vacuum pump and if so did it make your compressor run continuously. Seems like the way to go since I have a decent sized compressor.

Yes and it works great. You take off the red case and the chunk of metal is inside, that is the part you want the rest can go in the recycle bin.A good sized compressor is needed to run it though,a pancake can get it up to 23"hg,you still need a vac switch, mac valve, and vac gauge though from joewoodworker. For about 100$ total you can be up and running.I've also been told you can set the air pressure to acheive the desired vacuum and just use the valve with no swicthes/mac valves etc but I haven't tried that,I think you would need a much larger compressor too.

I know how your theories go so I would LOVE to help you prove it!

Here is the vacuum pump I bought from Harbor Freight (note the hose & fittings were not included with the pump – they are from the veneer kit linked next):

You’ll need to build one of these too – it helps to keep the bag from closing until the air is evacuated completely. It’s called a Platen. I made mine from MDF. I first cut it into a circle, then I drilled a hole in the middle, then used my bandsaw to cut intersecting kerfs across the top surface. Then, I cut vertical kerfs along the edge that intersect those on the top. To finish it off, I used my wood chisel to chamfer the kerfs and open up the reliefs so the air could flow more quickly/freely. Sand it all smooth. [links]

If you’re looking for a way to speed up your holster forming process, you’ve probably started researching either a hydraulic press or vacuum press, maybe both. I’ve never used a hydraulic press, but have been using a vacuum press to form holsters almost since I first started making holsters. What follows is a list of components I purchased for my kit.

One of the primary reasons why the mist may appear while the pump is switched on is due to a noisy pump. [links]

Is your vacuum pump smoking and you are worried that it is malfunctioning? Are you concerned about possible damages? Well, you may not have a major issue. In many cases, the smoke you see is actually mechanical pump oil vapor. Many people tend to think that whenever there is smoke emitting from the pump, it means there is something wrong with the machine. But, oil vapor or oil mist is a natural by-product of creating vacuum in an oil sealed mechanical pump. There is nothing to worry when you notice this kind of vapor because the pump emits it while pumping on a specific chamber from the atmosphere.

My first projects came out perfectly, I'm pleased to report. (Of course, I made a few goofs after the fact, but they had nothing to do with the vacuum press, veneer or bent laminations, just my stupidity. fortunately, I've learned some about fixing mistakes.) more

For my first project, I was planning to veneer a tabletop and create a curved, bent-lamination apron for a demilune table. Veneering the tabletop used the standard 49" x 49" bag that came with the kit; creating the curved apron required me to build a form on which to clamp the vacuum bag with the laminations inside; knowing I'd probably do several of these, I also bought the 8" x 12' 30mil vinyl bag. Having a second bag that fit the job made the lamination process much easier. more

* A big vacuum pump isn't required. Almost any pump designed to make a vacuum will make enough vacuum to press veneer. A higher-volume pump might be a minute or two faster in getting down to high vacuum, but that doesn't matter much in a home shop.

Funny how noise levels of my tools are all of a sudden important to me. here
