When you meet an oncoming vessel, and wish to pass port to port, you are required to sound one short blast with your horn. If the other boat is in agreement, they should respond with a similar blast. here

If you approach another vessel head on, and wish to pass it on its starboard side, you are required to sound two short blasts with your horn. If the other vessel is in agreement, they should sound the same signal in response. [links]

Sound signals are to be used only when vessels are in sight of each other and are meeting or crossing at a distance within half a mile of each other. These signals must never be used in fog or other conditions of reduced visibility, where the vessels are not visible to each other by eye. Only the fog signals listed under the Inland Rules, Rule 35 may be sounded at such time.

When you are planning on passing another vessel from behind, there are several things you must do. Any vessel that is overtaking another must keep out of the way of the vessel being overtaken. This means that you can't expect them to move, slow down, or change their course. If you plan on passing them on THEIR starboard side, you must sound one short blast. If they understand your signal and agree, they will sound one short blast in response. The vessel being overtaken has a responsibility to maintain course and speed in order to minimize the potential for collision. [links]

For tuning a guitar use our dedicated tuner or this list of the notes and frequencies for each string - starting with the thickest string to the thinnest.

To understand frequency, imagine if sound waves were visible. The higher the frequency of the wave, the less time would elapse between peaks of a wave passing a static point. The lower the frequency of the wave, the more time would elapse between peaks passing a particular point. more

We can think of one end of the range as what we call high pitched sounds (like a dog whistle) and the other end as low pitched sounds (like a boat horn). High pitch sounds have a high frequency, and low pitch sounds have a low frequency. more

Pitch can be thought of as the position of any given sound within the entire possible range of sounds.

Mike Lewis, 50, a Seattle journalist who said he loves taking the ferry from Bellingham, Wash., up to southeast Alaska, placed the Columbia’s bar among his “top favorite bars on the planet.”

“The real secret is that people don’t come to a bar to drink,” he said. “They come to connect. I remember after 9/11, when planes weren’t flying, everyone was piling onto the ferries. The bar was packed. I was sloshing the sauce all day long. It was so important; everyone was so distraught.” more

“When the world is driving you to drink, you need a place to drink!” said Tony Tengs, 61, the ferry system’s most senior bartender. In late March, aboard Motor Vessel Malaspina, Mr. Tengs was on his final run. He joked with a big laugh before sharing more sober reflections. more

But the bars are no more. In April, faced with a $3.5 billion budget deficit due to falling oil revenue, state officials shuttered the last of the bars on the six ferries that had them.

During summer’s high travel season, travelers wanting to wet their whistles on long journeys (some as long as four days) have had to make do by brown-bagging it in their staterooms — a luxury not enjoyed by the many ferry passengers who sleep in tents, deck chairs or observation lounge seats to save money. The only other authorized option for alcohol consumption is to order single-serve boxed wines and bottles of beer in cordoned-off areas of ferry cafeterias, which are often bustling with school-age children.

Regardless of the dueling spreadsheets, though, two things are certain: The bars are no longer open for business, and no one is happy about it. here

Residents were moved into the Summit, a 320-bed care home at 944 Hillside Ave., in July. The facility replaced the Oak Bay Lodge and Mount Tolmie Hospital. Its opening was delayed several months by COVID-19. here
