In Douglas Little's book ELECTRIC BOATS he presents some power measurements from typical trolling motors. Remember that his "horse power ratings" are based on current measured TO the motor and not the acual measured output of the motor. Here is a chart I made from some of his tests:

Finally let's say you add a second battery to the 30 pound thrust motor. If each battery draws half of the load, 15 amps per hour, then the endurance is about 5 hours, or 3.5 hours if you stick to the 70% rule. For a total range of about 3.5 x 4.3 = 15 miles.

1. With a canoe, at full power, I get about 6-8 miles out of a charge. At 3/4 power, I get about 8-10 miles. I never had enough patience to see how far I could go on anything less. I have discovered that I can go considerably farther with the canoe than the manufacturers estimate I should be able to go. That's because their estimates are based on much heavier boat, with a great deal more resistance to forward motion. I doubt that a converted row boat would be as successful as my canoe. I conclude therefore that an electric boat ought to be narrow, long, and as light as possible. Anything "extra" will reduce range. more

I have the BPS 55lbs 42 in shaft foot controlled motor that just came out. I think it pulls 46-47 amps. I can't remember for sure. It is in the manual. I would assume your motor would pull a similar number of amps.

Optima is one of the most popular trolling motor battery you can find on the market. It’s 12-volt deep cycle battery with 750 cold cranking amps. This battery weighs only 43.5 pounds with Dual SAW and 5/16″ stainless steel stud posts. This battery offers exceptional durability at a very decent price tag with great features. The optimal starting power can cope up with the bad weather too. You can use this on dual-purpose mode. Meaning, it can be used in both deep cycle applications or starting applications. Optima is a fantastic option for small boats or kayaks to fit trolling motors of 30-55 lb thrust like Minn Kota, Newport vessels, Cobra and more. here

Looking for the best trolling motor battery? Trolling motor requires deep cycle batteries to function properly. Trolling motor batteries are different than the regular battery you see in cars, trucks, and other typical vehicles. Those batteries are short cycle batteries. Trolling motor batteries are designed in such a way that they provide better and optimum performance on the go. Usually, best trolling batteries will have better durability and functionality. To ensure long time serving, these trolling batteries have a constant discharge rate for an extended period. We are going to share some of the best trolling motor batteries with you. These trolling motor batteries comparison chart will help you to choose the appropriate trolling motor battery for you.

Any trolling battery may do the work for you, but choosing the best trolling battery will help you to make the best out of your trolling motor. Regarding performance, durability, benefits, and ease of use, these features will massively help you in the long run. If you are entirely new to the water sports, you may think about powering up your trolling motor with the regular SLI-type car battery. However, it is not ideal to use a car battery do so. It might destroy or damage your trolling motor. This is why these trolling motor batteries will help you to roam on the water safely and without any hassle. The best trolling motor battery will offer you an excellent combination of price, small recharging time, better lifespan, better working time and more time for fishing.

A trolling motor battery with excellent in-depth cycle feature will last for up to size years if you don’t dry it up completely.

What size fuse should I go with? I plan to fuse it next to the power source, and the leads appear to be 7 gauge wire (they measure .141 with the insulation stripped away). I would assume I'd need an inline fuse with wires this size or larger.

I have a Minn Kota AT 40 trolling motor (40 lb. thrust). I've looked all over it and perhaps a label or tag is missing, but I can't find what amperage rating it is. One source said figure approximately 1 amp per pound of thrust, and I'm led to believe that's close. [links]

I've done numerous searches both here and on the internet, but found little but this link that specifically addressed my question (This chart was more of a "run time" than a maximum draw chart): [links]
