From his $130 million Washington mansion nicknamed "Xanadu 2.0," to Florida horse ranches, to his latest California oceanfront purchase, the Microsoft billionaire's personal real estate holdings could be worth over $200 million — and that's not including the purchases made through through his ultra-private investment firm, Cascade. more
Now, with the news that Gates and his wife of 27 years, Melinda, are splitting up, the Gates real estate portfolio may be under a microscope: The couple reportedly never signed a prenuptial agreement, but they do have a separation contract in place, which would stipulate how property should be divided. here
The land is spread out through the South, Midwest, and West — with holdings in 19 states. The couple has the most land in Louisiana and Arkansas with 69,071 acres and 47,927 acres, respectively. Their lowest holding is in New Mexico with just one acre. [links]
According to The Land Report, Gates owns 242,000 acres of farmland, in addition to 25,750 acres of transitional land and 1,234 acres of recreational land, for a grand total of 268,984 acres.
Sustainable farming is also important to the couple’s Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. One of the foundation’s goals is “to support country-led inclusive agricultural transformation across sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia,” according to its website. [links]
In January 2020, the foundation also announced a new agriculture nonprofit called Gates Ag One. The goal is to help “smallholder farmers adapt to climate change and make food production in low- and middle-income countries more productive, resilient, and sustainable,” the St. Louis Business Journal reported.

He graduated from Lakeside School in 1973. While at Harvard, he remained in close contact with Steve Balmer and Paul Allen, future partners at Microsoft.
He was born William Henry Gates on October 28, 1955 in Seattle, Washington. He studied at Lakeside School and early on showed interest in computers and programming. He was in eight grade when he began writing computer programming code.
In 1990, Microsoft was approached by IBM to help them develop an operating system. Microsoft came up with PC DOS (later on to become known as MS DOS). The operating system would become very successful and established Microsoft as a major player in the industry.
