One gallon of propane weighs 4.2 pounds. A “full” 20 lb cylinder should have 4.7 gallons or propane in it. The most common way to measure it is by gallons. It can also be measured by pounds (one gallon = 4.2lbs). When measured in gallons, a meter at the pump is used to determine the amount of propane that has been filled into a tank. When measured in pounds, the tare (empty starting) weight of the tank must be known first.

There is also a month and year on the collar indicating the date the tank was made. For 20 lb propane tanks, you have 12 years from the manufacture date before the tank must be re-certified with a new date stamped on it. The re-certification only adds 5 years before having to re-certify again. The cost and inconvenience of re-certifying almost always outweighs the price of a new tank.

Brand new propane tanks may come with air inside and need to be “purged” before the first fill. Some newer tanks, like Bernzomatic, will have a sticker on them saying they don’t need to be purged within 6 months of the manufacture date.

Purging requires a special adapter to allow a small amount of propane in. The pressure then pushes air out of a one-way bleeder valve. Purging may add another $3-4 dollars to a new tank, though some places don’t charge, especially if you buy the tank from them.

Remember, you have to option to store your propane tank underground. While the thought of having a gigantic 1,000-pound propane tank in your yard is unsettling, it can be buried so that you can keep your yard pleasing to the eyes. However, you may want to hire help to store it underground properly.

With news of the rain and snowstorms, icy conditions, destructive hurricanes, and even wildfires, which result in the power to entire areas being cut off for extended periods, it’s no surprise that people want to plan ahead. A major power outage can cause significant problems for homeowners and businesses. One possible solution is to invest in a generator that can run on 20 pounds of propane.

Given the increasing likelihood of interruptions to the power grid and the amount of time required to restore service, it makes perfect sense to consider how you’ll keep your family safe and comfortable. Preparing now will help you to meet whatever power outages you face, with minimum inconvenience.

Did you know that one of my first articles on this site was about what a "she shed" was? It's true, and it remains one of my favorite articles that I wrote on this site. Ever since that shed article.

The answer will depend on what you’re using the generator to power. A 22kw generator can be expected to consume approximately 2-3 gallons of fuel per hour.

If you have space, a 500-gallon or even a 1000-gallon tank will give you peace of mind, knowing that it will keep you going even during an extended outage of up to 10 days. If you decide to go with this option, locating the tank below ground will avoid it taking up space in the outdoor area around your home. here

Propane regulators guidelines you need to know!

RioMays
29.04.2021 8:45:54

It does not matter if you have a large propane tank or a small 5 gallon propane cylinder, almost all applications require a pressure regulator. A word of caution - one size does not fit all applications. One regulator may work well on a gas grill but may be too small for a home heating system. Always seek the assistance of a certified gas technician when making a regulator selection. Regulators must be able to: 1) produce the proper pressure, 2) and the proper BTU requirement for the total of all propane burning appliances connected to the gas line.

A compromise between the 250-gallon and 500-gallon tanks, the 325-gallon propane tank is the perfect fuel source for backup generators, or some smaller homes that use less than 500 gallons of propane per year.
