It is standard practice in the industry to pay a gratuity to your captain on charters. Like the restaurant industry, tips make up a substantial portion of a charter boat captain's income.
It is a way for you to show your appreciation of the service you have received from your captain.
A typical tip would range between 15 -20% of the value of a charter, just like your restaurant bill. Here is a guideline for our various charters:

Tipping is not included on a few rare activities and outside of the gratuities specified in your itinerary. here

If gratuities for your tour director and driver have not been prepaid, then it is customary to tip at the end of your coach tour. You can choose to do this individually, however, it is common for an envelope to be passed around the group and presented together at the end of the trip. Sometimes you will find a suggested tipping amount in your trip documents, but ultimately this is up to your discretion based on how happy you are with your experience. As a general guide, the tour director is tipped $5-10 per person/per day and the driver would expect to receive $2-3 per person/per day.

Even when gratuities are included in your tour/cruise, this may exclude local guides particularly for optional excursions. This will be noted in your trip details. If gratuities for your local guides are not included, then it is normal to tip for each on tour. It is common for your leader to discuss this with the group at the start of the tour and often collect an agreed amount from everyone to distribute appropriately. Sometimes the tour leader will do this themselves, or sometimes they will allocate a different member of the group the honour for each locally guided tour. If this is not initiated by your tour leader you can choose to tip individually or ask your leader what is appropriate. Local guides generally expect 10-15 percent of the tour price as a tip.

If the tip isn't included in the price, don't calculate it based on the cost of the tour; after all, that price probably includes hotels, meals and other fees, so adding 10 to 20 percent would be a lot of money. Instead, give a tip equivalent to around $5 per day, plus or minus a few dollars. Increase the tip if the guide went above and beyond to give you a good experience, or less if the guide didn't do much. here

In some cities, guides lead free walking tours. In those cases, an unspoken understanding exists that tour participants will be generous with tips. Give a minimum of the local equivalent of about $5 per hour.

Being a tour guide isn't an easy job, even in a place that feels like paradise such as Honolulu. The job often requires hours of walking (some of it backwards), answering dozens of questions and monitoring the safety of all group members. Guides often aren't paid much, because it's expected that part of their salary comes from tips, so don't be stingy at the end of a tour. Unless your guide was incompetent or rude, you should tip a minimum 5 percent of the cost of the tour, and maybe much more.

Remember that tipping is intended to be a recognition of a job well done. If your tour guide doesn't provide a good experience, you have no obligation to give a gratuity. more

Even if you feel confident about your ability to calculate a fair tip, ask your hotel's front desk clerk or concierge for guidance about gratuities. They're experts on the area's tourism industry and can suggest an appropriate range, and they can clue you in about any local quirks or customs about tipping. For instance, you may find that local guides prefer American dollars if the exchange rate works in their favor. Getting local input is especially wise outside of North America and Europe, as customs vary in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Central America and South America.

The Irish are known for being unassuming in conversations about money and have a tendency to decline tips on the first offer. The best way to give is to be persistent and discreet about it. Have your money ready before thanking your tour guide; then hand it over and walk away. Otherwise, you will likely find yourself in a polite back and forth that could go on for a while and potentially end up with you keeping your money. more

Tips for tour guides are especially appreciated during the winter months in Ireland, when tourism hits its annual lull. The best time to visit Ireland is technically during the summer months when the weather is sunny and warm and tourism is in full swing. This does, however, mean dealing with larger crowds and marginally higher prices. Those who visit between November and March benefit from cheaper airfare, accommodations and significantly smaller crowds. It’s easier to tip generously when you’ve saved money on everything else. here

Private tours are a great way to get to know the country (think castle tours or distillery tours), and although most tour guides are not expecting a tip, per se, most would be happy to receive one. A good guideline to follow is to tip your guide 10 percent of the tour cost. If the service has been exceptional, then you may want to tip from 15 to 20 percent. For group tours, usually a small basket or hat will be passed around at the end of the tour. If nothing is passed around and the group is generally pleased with the service, all of you can get together and pool money for the guide. more

Irish servers earn a wage comparable to other service professions, so they don’t rely on tips to pay their bills. Most restaurants and cafes will state clearly on the menu that the service is included in the price. If it doesn’t, feel free to ask and then tip accordingly. In places where it’s not included, tipping has gradually increased to 15 to 20 percent for excellent service in both restaurants and bars, but waitstaff will still find a 10 percent tip appropriate. In general, Irish bartenders do not expect a tip at all. One way around this is to offer to buy them a pint. here
