Still, it's fun to dream. And if our funds ever permit us to, the first stop would be one of these huge boats replete with gold bathroom fixtures, luxuriously expansive guest cabins, and Michelin-star service. So, how much exactly would that set you back?

It's still a massive discount considering the show's own Kate Chastain told ET, "Generally a boat that size, 150 foot — this one's 160, Valor — but around that price range, for seven days, is around $150,000. But that does not include airfare, fuel, food, wine, docking, tip. So, I would say for a boat like Valor, for a week vacation, it would be around a quarter of a million dollars." more

Watching Bravo's Below Deck, it's kind of impossible not to fantasize about renting one of the featured luxury yachts for yourself. For most of us regular folks, the idea of lounging around having every need tended to by a crew of hot, young twentysomethings is an experience we're only going to get watching this particular show (and its drama-filled spin-off, Below Deck Mediterranean, of course).

These boats are renowned for their ‘special features’ and customisation which could include anything from an entire deck area dedicated to a spa, complete with a hammam steam room, beauty saloon, massage room, a sauna; a helicopter deck that when not in use can transform into a soccer field or a basketball court, or even a discotheque. There is an increasing number of exclusive water toys, such as submarines, water jet packs, golf tees, waterslides or climbing walls.

The most sought-after destinations for luxury mega yacht charter holidays are the Mediterranean during northern hemisphere’s summer season and the Caribbean during the winter season. Northern Europe is also increasingly popular as well as the more exotic South Pacific and Asia. A luxury charter enables you to have exclusive access to beautiful white-sand beaches and uninhabited islands, crystal-clear waters of turquoise and emerald-green, quaint little ports and historical towns or vibrant metropolitan cities. more

The pinnacle of luxury yachts, a mega yacht charter holiday is regarded as the most opulent and extravagant ways of travelling. Although there is a fine line that divides mega yachts from superyachts, and although different terminology tends to be favoured on different sides of the Atlantic, vessels referred to as ‘mega yachts’ are usually well above 60 metres (200 feet), with some yachts reaching three times this size; an example being the 162.5m Eclipse yacht or the 180m (590’4’’) mega yacht AZZAM. Rumours have it that a new 222m mega yacht TRIPLE DEUCE is also in making waves in the nautical world. Luxury mega yachts provide no less than impeccable naval architecture and design, state-of-the-art marine technology, lavish interior and exterior decor, the best in guest entertainment and an amazing array of recreational amenities and toys. The crew aboard these vessels have been selected upon strict requirements, based on their previous yachting experience, references and acquired professional skills. One of the main characteristics of a private mega yacht charter is the exceptional level of professional and refined service, respectful of privacy and high-demands of customers.

From time to time selected yachts announce their intention to embark on a world-tour, with an approximate itinerary listing all the various stages and destinations. You can join the world tour at any stage, if availability permits, and stay aboard the yacht from one week, several weeks or even months, exploring the many wonders of this world. Some expedition-type yachts venture out to distant and remote ‘corners’ of the world, offering a very unique holiday for the more adventurous. These yachts may be equipped with high-tech laboratories, submarines and other necessary equipment to explore the given area - which may well be even Antarctica. here

Tipping rules change by destination. As a general rule, a 10% to 15% tip is customary when chartering in the Mediterranean, while a 15% to 20% tip is more common in the Caribbean.

On your last day on your yacht, it’s customary to put your entire tip in an envelope and hand it directly to your captain. If your trip was wonderful (and why wouldn’t it be?), include a personal note, tell the captain how wonderful the crew was, and leave it to the captain’s discretion on how to split up the tip. Treat everyone equally. Many crew members are involved in the operation of your yacht, from stewardesses refreshing your cocktails, to the deckhands setting up the slide for you. While it may be tempting to leave forward-facing members a more generous tip, it’s not recommended. Remember, the crew works as a team, and it’s important to reward them as a team. here

How much should you tip on a private yacht charter? And how do you leave a tip for the crew? That’s something almost every yacht charter guest wonders. According to the Mediterranean Yacht Brokers Association (MYBA) tipping guidelines, the general rule is to tip between 10% and 15% of your weekly charter fee, excluding running expenses and taxes. With that in mind, here are some other tipping “rule” for your charter: Let the captain decide who gets how much. [links]

Ultimately, it’s up to you on how much to tip. Most guests, though, base it on the quality of service. But remember: Most crew members are working 16- to 18-hour days, and a tip rewards them for all that hard work and service. If you have questions about how much to tip, consult with your charter broker – brokers can help you understand what’s customary. more

As an example, we will detail the expenses of a charter aboard Lady Carmen, a Hatteras 101′. She sleeps 10 guests, as most charter yachts, and features an on-deck full beam master suite with panoramic views. With a great array of toys and tender, a hot tub on the flybridge and an art deco interior she is one of the most popular charter yachts in the Carribean.

didiertomas2385

The first expense when chartering a yacht is the charter fee of course. Lady Carmen is asking $53,000 a week for example. That first expense buys the yacht, the crew and the insurances for a week. Then comes the second major expense, the advance provisioning allowance (APA). Then advance is transferred to the yacht’s captain and will be spent on your docking fees, food, fuel used. That expense may vary depending on the yacht but is usually 30% of the charter fee. If it is not spent entirely by the captain because the guests simply do not engage in many expenses, it is restituted at the end of the charter. here

One of the last expense is the crew gratuity. Representing between 10% to 20% of the charter fee, it is a tip for the crew and the captain. On average that gratuity raises at 15% yet remains at the discretion of the charterer. The final expense is your travel to the yacht and plane tickets to the destination. [links]

While yachting is most likely the most prestigious way to travel, it isn’t reserved exclusively for billionaires. Owning large superyachts is a privilege reserved for only the very few but there is an opportunity to enjoy a week aboard one of these luxurious vessels. Chartering a yacht is far less expensive than owning one. Especially if your use of the yacht is scarce. So how much does it really cost to charter a superyacht for a week? more
