Join our Jet Card membership program. It’s simple: pre-pay for flight hours in increments of 25-hour blocks. When you’re ready to fly, choose a jet category that will meet your specific needs. Your account will only be deducted for used flight time. You will not be charged for any aircraft repositioning, wait time, or overnight fees. After you’ve used your hours, purchase more or walk away.

This company needed several aircraft on the same day out of 6 different regional offices for 1-2 day missions starting and ending out of those offices. The fact that they needed several aircraft per day quickly eliminated the single private jet ownership solution, as did the decentralized departures. We have found many clients for whom decentralized departures make the ownership of one private jet more expensive than aircraft charter or even fractional ownership. [links]

For example, when a client of ours researched private jet ownership, they were told that because they were flying 800 hours, they needed a private jet of their own. It turned out that a charter service was actually their best option, due to their planned usage of the jet. [links]

For those who fly relatively little, charter is clearly the less expensive option. However, certain restrictions make fractional ownership the better option for many clients. As a general rule, charter companies have a two-hour minimum flight time charge. If you frequently take flights that are under the two-hour minimum, it may be better to purchase your own jet. more

For those that use private jets, the decision to use a charter service in lieu of purchasing a fractional share in a private jet is determined almost entirely by cost. The cost is generally only determined by sticker price and fails to take into account the differing tax benefits for each option. However, the less expensive option is not always the best choice.

If flying with the same operator is a priority, then fractional card companies such as Marquis Jets will provide the same services as a regular charter service, but handle all operations themselves. They are more expensive, but offer benefits such as larger fleets and consistent service that standard charter companies cannot. more

The truth is that the decision is not so simple. Choosing private jet ownership over a charter service depends not on the number of hours of use, but rather the type of use a private jet will get. [links]

Less Than 25 Hours: Pay-As-You-Fly
The most infrequent private fliers have no business buying into a membership plan. Instead, you should price out and charter individual flights with an app, such as Skyjet‘s. And unless you’re extremely well-heeled, don’t bother pricing out one of these trips unless you can gather a large group of fliers. For example, a round trip flight from Boston to Orlando costs a heart-stopping $35,663 via Skyjet, and on-board a Nextant 400XT. Split between two fliers, that’s still a rather serious investment for a single round-trip flight. By comparison, two roughly equivalent non-stop commercial flights would add up to $1,680 for economy class, or $1,904 for first class.

Another possible perk: Avoiding major airports entirely. Charters can usually be scheduled to operate from small, regional airports, including nearby ones that you never realized existed. For this writer, for example, Skyjet flights are available from an airstrip a 16-minute drive away from my home, as compared to 40 minutes drive-time to Boston’s Logan Airport, or well over an hour with typical traffic. more

25 to 50 Hours: Jetsetting With Jet Cards
Because even the wealthy have good reason to save money, anyone taking more than a dozen or so private flights per year should look into a jet card. These are the luxury air travel equivalent of a prepaid phone card, where you purchase a set number of hours in advance. Sentient, for example, offers a 25-hour jet card for anywhere from $124,825 (for access to small aircraft built before 2000) to $350,325 (the biggest and newest models). here
