Standard tapered trailer wheel bearings are recommended to be re-packed with fresh bearing grease about every year or every 12,000 miles under normal use. In certain conditions this interval could be shorter, such as if you routinely tow the trailer under conditions of extreme heat or near its maximum load capacity. This and other recommended trailer maintenance procedures are outlined in the linked article, which may interest you. [links]

You guys were great helping provide part# for replacement bearing kits. I bought 2 sets to carry with me for just in case failures. I have zirk fitting on my axles, so greasing them is somewhat easy after pulling off the wheel. How often should I grease with zirk fitting? Any pitfalls to just adding new grease with zirk fitting? When is it time to completely disassemble bearing, races, etc, and clean out old grease and repack bearing with new grease? Thanks for your help!

With the EZ lube zerk fitting you'll want to pump grease until you begin to see the outer bearing move or you see grease seeping through the outer bearing. If you pump the grease slowly and rotate the hub, you should not blow the grease seal. Once you see the grease seeping through, you can install the washer, spindle nut and nut retainer. Keep in mind, when threading on the castle nut, you will want to tighten the nut until it is hand tight and then slightly back it off. here

You may also choose to make things a bit easier by using the LubriMatic Deluxe Bearing Packer # L70025, which has a fitting at the top that you can use with a hand operated or power grease gun. [links]

The other thing you may want to look at is the tires on your Sun Valley Coleman, as it is recommended to replace trailer tires every 6 years, regardless of mileage and use. If you find that they need to be replaced, I will be happy to offer you some recommendations if you are able to send me the size of the existing tires.

My grown up children want to use my well-looked-after 1986 Sun Valley Coleman tent popup trailer - do I need to replace the wheel bearings before they use it or can I just regrease them? Thanks for any advice.

We recommended to repack the wheel bearings on your trailer every 12 months or 12,000 miles. There is not a specific guideline as far as actually replacing the bearings. When repacking them with grease, you will also just want to check for any damage or wear and replace anything if needed. As long as everything looks fine, there is no need to replace the bearings based on time alone. here

If you will be packing the bearings by hand, I recommend using a grease like the LubriMatic Disc/Drum Brake and Wheel Bearing Grease # L11380.

Act accordingly by what you find out after taking a look at them. It’s a good remedy as long as you remember about the maintenance of bearings. here

To find out the mileage of a trailer, go through the owner’s manual. Contacting the travel trailer dealer will also work. more

Some suggest checking them every 1 or 2 years. However, the smartest solution is you should have a look at the wheel bearings by the miles they have covered. Considering that, check the bearings every 10,000 to 12,000 miles.

When it comes to maintenance, we often ignore the wheel bearings. Most of us will just replace them if they start giving troubles. No need to spend that extra money! You can save a lot by repacking them with grease. Let’s get you up to speed on how often and when to apply the grease.

You can choose to grease them every 1 or 2 years. Yes, it’s not the best advice but still better than no greasing at all. In this case, the bearings will be, at least, get checked and greased. more
