Remove the lug-nuts from the trailer wheel with the trailer tire iron. Pull the wheel off of the trailer axle hub assembly. more

Slide jack-stands under the trailer axle and frame so they are accessible when you lift the trailer. Jack-stands are designed to catch the trailer axle if the trailer shifts or falls, never put your body under the trailer.

When our installers replace a trailer hub, there isn't a set torque spec used when tightening the spindle nut. The hub is placed on the spindle, making sure the inner and outer bearings are correctly seated. The spindle nut is then run down until you start feeling resistance. At that point, spin the hub and check for end play (wobble). If the hub still seems a bit loose, you can run the nut down a bit more.

According to our installers you will tighten the trailer spindle nut until it stops by itself. In other words do not torque it down as hard as you can. It just has to be tight. A little play is to be expected. You do not want to torque it down too tight, because that makes the bearings too tight and then that generates heat and your bearings come apart.

You might want to try tightening it a few times to get a feel for where it seems like the spindle nut naturally stops. more

Once it is fairly tight back it off one notch so the tang lines up and then push the tang (small pin) into the groove on the spindle nut.

Whenever you install new hubs or new bearings and races into an old hub, you should pre-load the bearings. Pre-loading the bearings assures that the races in the hubs are 100% in place against their machined stop points and keeps the hub from wobbling after a few miles.
