Ideal for home, cabin, yard, boating, agriculture, construction sites and recreation, Tarp Tape is the perfect solution to repair those rips and tears in your poly tarps. This unique tape reinforces stress points before rips occur. Use it to join two tarps together and create a secure waterproof seam. [links]

To do this, you can use a good tarp tape, tarp glue (which works only on vinyl tarps, not the more common polyethylene ones), or you can use a soldering gun or plastic welder to "glue" two tarps together by fusing the plastic they're made of. You can use a soldering iron to fuse plastic tarps together. more

Similarly, what is TARP made out of? A tarp or tarpaulin is a large sheet of water-resistant & fire-resistant cloth or plastic material made of canvas, polyester or polyethylene.

Yes! You can cut the tarp where you need to. Then, fold the edge over about 1 inch and then again (double fold the edge). Use our Tarp Tape to hold the edge in place. [links]

I've come to the point where I need to make doors and windows/vents in the canopy, and some #10 industrial zippers seem like a cheap, ideal way to accomplish this. The problem is the zipper tape is a nylon weave that more or less needs to be sewn on to the vinyl. Referring to my earlier point about zero access/zero skills with a sewing machine, this makes for a bit of a problem.

Another thought I had was taking my lengths of zipper to an awning place or shoe repair place and getting them to sew a 3" wide vinyl strip to the zipper tape, so I can then use my solvent cement to attach the zippers to the rest of the canopy. I like this idea, but it's sort of a pain in the rear, and it may wind up costing me a fair bit to have the sewing done (I live in a place where precious little is cheap to get done). more

I'm building the canopy for my geodome right now. I'm making it from 16oz fabric reinforced vinyl tarp material, and I'm making the seams with a solvent based vinyl cement. This is mostly because I have no sewing machine, zero sewing machine skills, and I think this way is actually easier and stronger anyway. here

So, I have a couple of ideas. One idea was using snaps to attach the door flap directly to the dome skeleton in the door area. I am not sure how strong this would be; probably pretty strong if I use heavy marine snaps designed for boat canopies and such and space them close together. This sounds less ideal than a nice zipper though, and I'm considering this a plan "B". more

Tarps are an essential part of many camping trips or outdoor gatherings. You can use them as a covering for food preparation areas or as a barrier against cold or rain. In the yard, you can can lay out tarps to cover a high-traffic area and reduce stress on your grass. Most tarps are not large enough for every job, but they have the advantage of coming with single metal eyelets at the corner and double eyelets in the middle.

Lay out the tarps on a flat surface. Check the length and the width of the tarps. Try and piece them together with the largest pieces in the middle and the smaller pieces on the edges. [links]

Figure out the size you need and buy a tarp. Tarp sizes will drive you crazy. I needed a 13'2"X 13'8". I bought a 15'2" by 19'6" or something like that.
My plan is to cut off two sides and make it fit exactly. Let's see how that worked out.

So you want your tarp to fit your structure.
A perfect fit from end to end, top to bottom.
Grommets spaced out just enough to keep it taunt.
No sagging roof or unsightly excess flapping in the wind.
I tried to find directions online but most videos and instructables are all about nylon, polyester and natural canvas fabrics.
Burners often use these woven poly tarps on their carports and flat-topped shade structures. Let's begin.
Put up your frame and measure it. Bring a pad of paper and write down EVERY measurement you can think of. Draw pictures from the top from the side, front, back, close ups of joints all with measurements. Take pictures. It's not so funny when you have to go out at night with a flashlight to find out where the crossbar is in relation to your grommets.

Use a piece of paper, (or two or three), to figure out how many inches to add before you cut. I added 4½". This way I could fold it a couple of times and sew through 3 thicknesses of tarp. [links]
