Sandy Yawn, the coolheaded captain who has shot to fame on Below Deck has returned to the helm for season six, Below Deck Mediterranean. Speaking to BOAT International she opens up about her experiences of filming the hit US reality show shown on US network Bravo.
She admits that her first season on the show, which saw her take charge of the 47 metre Heesen superyacht Sirocco during a busy charter season in Croatia, was a “huge learning curve” in comparison to working on professional charters. more

Over the past decade I’ve worked all types of different jobs, but I would have to say my favorite by far has been working in the yachting industry. If you’re a young able-bodied person, and you follow the right steps, you have a chance at getting a job on a yacht. It’s not easy, but it’s not impossible. You can read manuals and take courses all day, but it’s not going to do you any good if you cant even open doors, turn on lights, or talk on your “walkie talkie.”
So this guide is for all of you aspiring yachtie divas out there, who like me, need to spend a lot more time learning about the more basic aspects of life on a boat. I’m going to walk you through step by step, and take it down to a level that we divas can readily understand. Besides helping you get hired, I’m going to focus on how not to get fired because there’s a lot of mistakes you can make early on in the game. I know because I made just about all of them. So learn from Bake’s mistakes so you don’t look so dumb in front of all those yachtie hotties like I did! 🙂 This is not an extensive guide to everything you need to know about yachting, this is just to get you on a boat, and help you through your first couple of weeks on board…The three phases of yacht life: more
