According to the Aircraft Owners and Pilot Association, there are a few fundamental maintenance costs that every owner must pay attention to such as fuel, oil, engine reserves/overhaul and landing fees. In an example from an AOPA article, Hypothetical Operating Cost Calculation, a pilot flying 100-hours per year vs. 300-hours per year can make a huge difference so it’s important to note that these calculations can vary based on travel schedule and the condition of the aircraft. Here is the breakdown of the fundamental maintenance and operating costs based upon 100-hours vs 300-hours: [links]

In my research, I stuck to five fundamental principles that play into the cost of owning an airplane -- the initial purchase price, maintenance and operating costs, insurance, hangar rental space vs. tie-down, and of course, upgrades/add-ons. more

According to a 2012 article in Flying Magazine, the Cessna 172R, the less powerful of the two Cessna Skyhawk models mentioned, seats four people comfortably, carries 918lbs of “useful load,” has a max cruise speed of 124 Knots True Airspeed or 142 mph and is capable of travelling at 640 nautical miles or 736 miles. And if you were wondering, it comes with the option to add Automatic Dependent Surveillance- Broadcast (ADS-B) upgradable traffic so that you’re able to fly in 2020. [links]

The other day I came across an article about the most elaborate and expensive aircrafts around the world. These aircraft, owned by some of the richest people alive, contain the most extravagant upgrades available and are worth more money than I’ve ever seen.

I have never considered owning an airplane a possibility. In fact, before writing this, I couldn’t imagine the price tag or the copious amount of maintenance that I thought comes with ownership – heck, I’m lucky if I remember to get my oil changed every 3,000 miles.

    Purchase Price:
The time has finally come: you’ve completed all of the necessary training to be a pilot, you’ve found a lender that is willing to help you finance your aircraft purchase and now you’re ready to sign on the dotted line to close the deal. So, what is that magic number to officially make you an owner? Of course, you can also save a great deal of money buying used starting at around $30,000 with some hours on it, but if you want the new, never-worn before feel, that’s going to cost you $274,900.

Savvy NetJet customers are now using their cards for one way flights only; choosing to charter for return or multi leg flights where 40% savings are possible.

This means our owner flying 200 hours per year himself would have to achieve around 550 charter hours to cover the operating costs of the aircraft and pay for his own flying – ambitious but possible! here

Not all aircraft are automatically compliant, for example aircraft with a US registration (N) are rarely compliant with EASA and specific upgrades/modifications are normally required which can be costly. more

However owning a private jet is a difficult thing to justify even for the wealthiest and like a car is only likely to depreciate in value. Most jet owners acquire an aircraft not because they need to own one but because they want to. [links]

Then there are private airliners with custom made interiors which make that look like pocket change.

Is now a good time to buy?
If there was ever a good time to buy then it is now. Aircraft values have dropped dramatically across the board in recent years and are now starting to stabilise, with some models even seeing some growth. [links]

According to GAS, for size and flying range, light jets ($3 million to $8 million) can take 5 to 8 passengers roughly 2,000 miles. Midsize executive jets ($9 million to $16 million) can take up to 9 passengers from 2,000 to 3,000 miles. Large executive jets ($17 million to $45 million) can carry 12 passengers more than 4,000 miles. more

Consider the hidden costs. As GAS notes, factor in necessities such as insurance, fuel, catering and pilots. Aircraft management companies will take care of these needs for about $100,000 to $200,000 per year, depending on the size and usage of the jet.

According to Dave Cribbin, CEO of boutique aircraft finance firm TailWind Capital Group, standard loan terms are 3 and 5 years, with loan amortizations of 15-20 years on newer aircraft and 10-12 for early 1980's vintage models. Pre-payment penalties may also be included in the transaction and usually 1% for the first three years. And standard legal fees apply to any purchase. here

Two important caveats: One, your probably shouldn't do it yourself. Aircraft management companies and buying consultants like Integral Aviation Solutions and TWC Aviation Inc. can coordinate the purchase, and keep your plane flying afterwards--for a fee, of course.

In summary, pre-owned vs new will largely depend on your financial circumstances and the reasons that you are purchasing a private jet in the first place. [links]

New private jets can cost anywhere form $3 million to over $70 million. The cheapest new private jet that you can purchase is the Cirrus Vision Jet SF50. The most expensive new private jet that you can buy is the Gulfstream G700 costing $75 million. Of course, there are plenty of aircraft inbetween.

The pre-owned market provides a wide range of options. You can purchase aircraft that are months old to jets that are over 50 years old. [links]

However, in its most simple terms, if you fly similar routes for hundreds of hours per year and you aren’t satisfied by your current solution, then purchasing a private jet make be the right choice. here

New aircraft have a higher upfront cost. However, maintenance will be lower throughout your ownership experience. Furthermore you will be able to retain the manufacturer’s warranty for increased peace of mind. Additionally you will also have extensive customization options. here
