The black walnut grows well in a variety of conditions but performs best in open areas where the sun shines brightly throughout the day. During periods of drought, your black walnut tree may drop its leaves. The foliage of the tree typically develops into a rounded shape that spreads 60 to 80 feet. Plants that are suffering from juglone poisoning show stunted growth, wilting and yellowed leaves before eventually dying. The fruit of the black walnut tree has a hard, round casing that can create a hazard around the tree. Black walnuts are susceptible to minor pests, including tent caterpillars, scale insects, mites and webworm larvae. [links]

First off, we’d be remiss if we didn’t point out that the best way to avoid black walnut stain is to eat English walnuts instead. We suggest the tasty Chandler variety grown by Chandler Orchards. [links]

However, if you’ve been cracking black walnuts chances are that you’ve not only given yourself a cramp, but you’ve also stained your hands. Black walnut shells are rock hard, unlike the English walnut’s soft shell. Removing a black walnut stain is not difficult, but you’ll need to get a few easy to locate household items:

Black walnuts are wild walnuts that are native to North America. In contrast to the English walnuts that you find in most grocery stores, black walnuts have a stronger flavor and are more difficult to break out of their shells. [1] X Research source In order to harvest these flavorful nuts correctly, you’ll need to wait until early fall and gather them when they are ripe. Once you’ve collected the nuts, remove the tough hulls and dry the nuts in their shells before cracking them open to get the nutmeat. more

The other day we received an inquiry over the internet asking for a solution for a black walnut stain on a composite deck. Apparently, the black walnut tree overhangs the deck of the client and when the nuts fall from the tree they leave a dark stain on the decking material. Black walnut leaves a nasty, pervasive stain that can be very hard to remove. here

As it happens, we also have a black walnut tree in our yard and occasionally it drops nuts on our barbecue area, leaving stains on the concrete pad and composite trays on sides of the barbecue. So, I went out to the barbecue and tried some of our EATOILS™ BT200™ to see how it would handle the nasty stains from when the nuts last fell, a few months ago - diluted at 3 parts water to 1 part BT200™, I sprayed the stains(5) and brushed them with a soft bristle brush and in 5 minutes all the stains were gone from both the composite material and the concrete pad.

We already know EATOILS™ BT200™ does an amazing job on 'TREX' and composite decks where bbq grease and decaying leaves have left ugly stains. - Just spray with EATOILS™ BT200™ and brush, and the stains are gone! Now, after this trial, we know it will also look after the stains left by other organic materials like nuts and seeds - give it a try and let us know how it works for you.
