AmTech's corrosion layer systems allow fiberglass tanks to be repurposed and compatible with today's chemical and fuel blends.

When the need arises to switch the use of an existing tank from one contained product to another, we offer many product specific corrosion layer systems, compatible with products the tank may not have been originally designed to contain.

Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCI) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) are two aggressive chemicals stored in FRP vessels. Each year, AmTech refurbishes hundreds of fiberglass tanks used by the water, waste-water and chemical processing industries.

Any septic tank must pass the ‘wet pit’ test, and fiberglass tanks pass this with high grades.

Depending on the construction methods, the condition of the soil, and the materials used while manufacturing, a fiberglass tank can last as long as twenty to thirty years. more

1. They weigh less compared to steel and concrete tanks and can be easily installed anywhere. This can be a huge advantage in areas where big trucks or cranes find it difficult to reach.
2. They can be hauled even in a pickup truck.
3. They are very sturdy and durable. These tanks can last for years without getting affected due to sudden temperature changes or corrosion.
4. They can withstand corrosive materials better than concrete tanks.
5. Damage caused is easier to repair when compared to other variants of tanks.
6. Roots of trees find it difficult to penetrate into them, unlike as in concrete tanks.

To sum it up, if you’re looking for a budget-friendly option that’ll serve your purpose, fiberglass tanks are the best option. [links]

I suspect I might have parts of my fiberglass hull soaked with diesel. Although it is still unclear to me how exacly it got there, and if it did at all, the fact is that I had diesel sitting in the bilge for several months (away from the boat, couldnt check regularly), and there are strains on the outside. It feels oily to the touch, hence my assumption of it being diesel.

The wicking is extensive, far more than bad wicking. On good GRP there is a uniform opaqueness indicating full coating of the glass strands with resin. Some of the survey books show wicking and it is mostly opaque with a few strands, clumps of strands not coated with resin. It looks to me (an amateur), that the hole cut for the seacock has allowed the diesel to travel through very small channels of dry strands, wicking along the hull to the keel. If diesel doesn't weaken the GRP the lack of bonding may very well be a cause of worry. [links]

If any of you has any suggestion on how to dry the hull or what needs to be done, it would be really appreciated, thanks.

Another fuel system design utilizes a slightly different arrangement, with the fuel injection pressure being created external to the unit injectors by means of a high-pressure fuel pump. In this arrangement, fuel is not continually circulated through the supply line. Instead, a small amount of fuel is bypassed during fuel injection and this bypassed fuel is returned to the fuel tank. Due to high pressure in the fuel supply, the fuel temperature increases, and the bypassed amount is therefore passed through a cooler before it is returned to the fuel tank.

Storage tanks used for ethanol-blended diesel fuel need to be fitted with a flame arrester at the vent pipe outlet. This is because ethanol-blended diesel fuel is a flammable liquid with a low flash point.

The vent pipe should be sized per API Standard 2000 Venting Atmospheric and Low-Pressure Storage Tanks, but in no case should it be less than 1.25 inches inside diameter. Also, see Table 23.6.2 in NFPA 30 for vent line sizes as a function of vent pipe length and liquid flow. The vent pipe can be fitted with a U-bend and/or a screen to prevent entry of foreign material. However, these devices create flow restrictions, which are aggravated by blockage due to dirt or insect nests. The flow restrictions should be considered in the pressure drop calculations when estimating tank overpressure/vacuum conditions during operation that could otherwise damage the tank shell.
