Definately agree with the others. I toasted a motor this way. Changing the water pump is way more fun than trying salvage a burned up motor.

When you have the lower unit off i would check the water tube they are prone to packing with sand. if that is the case the water jacket and t-stat may also need cleaned.

I would replace the impeller. It doesn't take muck to ruin the fins on the impeller. Cheap enough to do for the reassurance.

To TMD, got a question. Do you think the water pump kit for the force(Mercury part) would fit a 1970 Chrysler 55hp? here

Sand will accumulate in the engine block over time. You could try to flush the starboard side a bit more. Repeated flushing via the drain plugs is probably your best approach.

I recently rebuilt my engine and the water passages were about 1/3 full of sand and iron sediment after 20 years. If sand build up becomes terminal, then popping out the core plugs for flushing is the next step. more

The problem with sand is that it is heavy and doesn't disolve in water. So once it finds a place to rest, the water just flows past it. So, you need to move a lot of water, quickly to get some of it to move. Probably can't deliver enough water on muffs.

Re: Flushing freshwater through engine from dock hose? 3.0L Mercruiser

If I just keep it plain jane raw water cooling, is there a kit I can buy that will let me hook up a hose to run freshwater through the engine from the hose? I've read how people put some type of T fitting, or a special connector so you can run the fresh water hose at the dock through the engine. Anyone know about this, and what is needed to rig this up?

Are these what I need? I've read that some people just reach down and put the muffs on, but if there is a better way I want to know.

Remove the pump, take it apart and count the remaining blades. Place the outlet house (the softer of the two) somewhere where you can sort of see the end, if any pieces come out. Then, remove the hose from the port side of the thermostat housing that comes from the pump. There are no check valves in your hoses. If you can, shine a light into the thermostat housing and look for any pieces lodged in it. Then spray water down that hose with your garden hose handle on the setting that allows it to spray the most volume and pressure. Count the blades that come out of the pump outlet hose that you positioned so you can sort up see it. If the total number of blades don't add up to the muber of blades on the new impeller (7 I think) then you may have to take components apart. [links]
