Raise the sides and sit deeper in the water.

I am not worried about the legality stuff here - just safety.

I see there is foam below the aluminum bench seats and I keep wondering if that was to increase buoyancy (I'm correlating buoyancy and weight capacity of the hull) or merely used as a cheap stabilizer for the otherwise pliable aluminum.

This might be a dumb question but is there a way to increase the weight capacity of an aluminum boat? Reason I ask is because i have a little 12' boat that I would like to be able to run 800 - 1000lbs but it is rated at 600lbs.

So this leads us to ask the question: how to determine boat lift capacity? To determine your boat lift capacity, you need to add up the wet weight, dry weight, fuel, gear, and any other additions to your boat. You can find the dry weight of your boat in the brochure or record that came with the boat.

3. Water weight is the next thing you need to find out. It works just like the gasoline weight. A good estimate for water is around 0.96 kilograms/liter or 8 pounds/gallon. This figure should be multiplied with the boat’s freshwater tanks, waste, and all livewells’ total capacity to determine an accurate water weight.

Why do you need a margin of safety when determining boat lift capacity? here

Your boat style—including beam, lift, hull shape, draft, presence of an inboard or outboard motor, etc.—will also determine the kind of lift you need. The length of your cradle beam should be the length of the widest portion of your boat with a four-inch cushion on either side (10 if you’re using guideposts). Sheaves as part of a pulley system can be added to increase the capacity of the boat lift, but again, ask your local Shoremaster dealer if this is an option for your lift. more

Lifting your boat out of the water offers a lot of protection and increases the lifespan of your equipment—you just have to make sure you’re investing in the right lift. Some boat lifts on the market can be upgraded to handle higher capacities, but always ask your dealer if that’s possible just to be safe. When it comes to your long-term investment, though, some boat dock lift qualities make lifting heavier boats easier and help you determine what capacity you’ll need.

Before investing in or upgrading a boat lift, make sure that the materials are strong and engineered to last. ShoreMaster recommends aluminum for most boat lift scenarios. It allows for optimal stability and performance across a variety of shorelines. Because it’s a lighter material, it can be made thicker and therefore stronger without adding a lot of extra weight. It’s low-maintenance and holds up well in many conditions. [links]

Obviously, the weight of your watercraft determines your capacity. Your boat specification sheet will have the base dry weight of your boat, but think about how much your boat will weigh after you add gas, batteries, water, equipment, passengers, and anything else you’ll be taking onto the water. Allow a 20% safety margin for weight, and always size up for boat lift capacity: you can’t be too careful.

Style and size of your boat: The shape of the hull, draft of the boat, an inboard or outboard motor… these can all impact the type of boat lift you need. You should know the length of the cradle beam as well, which is the widest portion of your boat, plus a minimum four-inch cushion on either side. Guideposts would require at least ten inches on either side. ShoreMaster, for example, offers separate vertical boat lifts, hydraulic boat lifts, and pontoon lifts. To determine which will work best for your boat, you can compare model capacities, rack and lift style, lift height, and more. more

Leaving your boat in the water year-round increases the risk of weather damage, sinking, and more! Fortunately, boat lifts offer protection from the elements and can increase the lifespan of your boat and equipment.

Boating World says that fuel is approximately six pounds per gallon of gas and water storage is about eight pounds per gallon. Add some life jackets, heavy waterskiing accessories, and scuba gear, and your boat lift weight capacity can really skyrocket! That’s why you need to find a boat lift that provides you with peace of mind — as well as easy installation and ownership. [links]

Before buying a boat lift, however, you first have to determine the boat lift capacity you need. Basic information, such as width and dry weight, is a solid starting point for figuring out the right style and size. We dive in deeper below to outline the factors that need to be taken into consideration to determine your boat lift capacity.
