Exactly! safety chains aren't meant to keep the boat on the trailer in a bad accident. That is nearly impossible to do, doesn't matter how well you beef up the chain, the fiberglass will simply rip out the instant there is a good shock load put on it. more

The winch strap has a big hook for the bow eye - doesn't leave much room for another big hook attached to the safety chain. Can I use a smaller hook for the safety chain? Can I hook the safety chain into the eye of the winch strap hook?

Here are all of the various pieces. [I forgot to take a picture before I had already cut the chain with bolt cutters.] here

Sorry but think again. Al this stuff is good for bumps on the road. But one accident and the boat is gone.

AS for the length issue, try different type of links. For instance, instead of using shackles, use a threaded link. It may make a difference. Once you get everything exactly like you want it, you can buy liquid latex and dip the exposed parts (not the hook) in it to quiet it down. [links]

I wouldn't go much beyond this. I do have a chain and a strap in addition to the winch, but I don't have the loosening issue described above. [links]

I'm embarrassed to say that I actually called Greenfield to ask how I could repair the PVC coating caused by me cutting the chain in half. Greenfield said that I could touch-up the damaged PVC coating with Plasti Dip . It turned out, however, that the damaged PVC coating was almost invisible where it is in the anchor shackle next to the trailer bracket.

What do you guys do? Do you have something that backs up your wench or am I being paranoid?

I have thought about getting a cable or chain to wrap around the post that holds the wench and then figure out a way to connect it to the eye on the middle tube. The wench strap has a BIG hook on it, so there is not much room left in the eye on the tube, but I can figure something out to do the job. Just wondered what others do since I'm new to the toon scene. more

Lakerunner, that's an interesting technique. I'm afraid my boat would be off the trailer if I tried it. I can connect my wench strap, and actually wench the boat up a little, without even getting off the boat though. My wife backs the trailer in and I pull the boat on to the trailer. By the time it stops floating on with very minimal throttle (pretty much an idle), I can actually reach the wench from the boat. I hook up the bow/wench strap, crank it a few rounds, and my wife pulls us up the ramp. If I choose to, I can actually stay in the boat. We're new at this, but that's the way it works at the one ramp we've used so far. I guess it is kind of a steep ramp.

I do put on transom straps, but that happens later at the top of the ramp. more
