The Tayana Vancouver 42 was the result of a collaboration between the legendary Taiwanese yard Ta Yang and the equally well-known designer Robert Harris. She followed on the heels of the prolific Tayana 37 design by Bob Perry and was one of a series of "Vancouver" designs including 27 and 36 footers. Production started in 1979 and ostensibly continues to this day though it makes much more sense to look at the brokerage market. She has a canoe stern, solid teak joinery, and three different deck plans. This 42-footer is a practical, offshore cruiser on which to cut the dock lines and head for the horizon.

Ta Yang made their bones with the Perry designed 37, but Tayana 42 solidified their reputation for quality construction and fine teak interiors. Production started in 1979 and in total about 200 Vancouver 42 hulls have been built. The early Tayanas, from 1979 until 1985 while not overly prone, do have an association will gelcoat blistering. After 1985, the yard switched to an isophthalic gelcoat to resist blistering and, after 1992, laminated the hulls with vinylester resin. Though Ta Yang will make a new one if you want, they have not produced one in some years.

“La Buena Vida” is a fine example of the renown bluewater cruiser and classic sailboat, the Tayana Vancouver 42. These yachts were the result of a collaboration between the legendary Taiwanese yard Ta Yang and the equally well-known designer Robert Harris. Tayana 42s are known for being overbuilt with a reputation as a solid performing passage-maker. They have exceptional storage capacity and are built for going the distance, but her sea-kindly hull form carries her weight with considerable grace. These are well designed for a cruising couple, with their stunning interior joinery they have a sense of warmth and richness that is hard to find in other boats. more

“La Buena Vida” received many fine upgrades in 2018, with a new Genoa, new stackpack, refurbished main and staysail, new interior cushions, bottom paint and others. If you’re looking for a great cruising boat at a reasonable price, she’s worth looking in to.

The Tayana Owners Group is a volunteer organization serving Tayana and Vancouver yacht owners the world over. Our goal is to encourage the exchange of information among yacht owners, the yacht building yard, manufacturer's representatives, yacht dealers, and commercial houses - all concerned with Tayana. We have over 2,000 members who own boats from 32 to 55 feet. The most popular boat class is the Tayana 37 shown here, but we have many V-42, T-47/48, T-52, and T-55 owners also. Because the building rate in Ta Yang is lower now, an owners' network is imperative to help maintain our boats, find replacement parts, exchange maintenance tips, and share experiences about sailing/cruising our boats. In the past, we accomplished this primarily by publishing a quarterly newsletter mailed to all members, TOG News, but now in 2005 we've found we can share more information faster by utilizing internet technology.
