Stand at the back of the boat and have an assistant stand to the other side. Both reach down and grip the shaft handle, typically found at the water line. With both of you gripping, coordinate a slow lift of the shaft. Lift and have the assistant hold it up.

Inboard-outboard boats (I/O) use engines housed in the rear of the boat under a cowling. The propeller and prop shaft is attached to a power trim that raises and lowers this part of the engine. If the power trim malfunctions, the shaft and propeller must be raised manually. It helps to have one or two assistants with the task, which requires coordination to lift the prop-shaft up and lock it into the upright position.

Reach to the back of the engine housing to the back transom -- the very back edge of the boat. Look for two metal pins connecting the shaft to the trim-motor. Use an adjustable wrench to unscrew the pins from the trim motor, preparing the shaft-propeller to be raised manually. Leave the cowling open.

Push the lock pins you unscrewed from the motor through the trim settings in the cowling area. Push the pins into the holes at the shaft to lock the engine into the upright position. more

its probably a tohatsu. tohatsu offers power tilt & trim on the 25HP. i'm not sure if you can add it on after the fact. the 1995-2005 mercury manual tilt is so generic that you could probably adapt it to fit any engine. here

hmmm no one knows. i'm assuming mercury wouldn't make a motor that you could not tilt relatively easy for the majority of the public. i'm hoping thats the case so i don't waste $100 in gas to go see this thing. [links]

If your drive is stuck up (too high), you will be able to lower it by disconnecting the lines. As for fixing the problem, you can't do the job right unless you pull the boat out of the water. If you replace the pump and use new fluid with the same faulty trim cylinders, you are going to end up with another milkshake. Rebuilding/replacing the trim cylinders is a quick job, just costs some $. You could also be lucky and it could just be a leaking hose or connection, which is an even quicker fix. I'd pull the boat for a few hours and replace them if it were mine. here

First, try smacking the motor with a hammer or block of wood. It might run again. It is helpful to have a helper when doing this, but not imperative. This might get it to work enough to get it up so you can get it out of the water. I have been here and that's how I did it. [links]

You can find a new motor online for about 80 bucks. I would not replace the entire motor/pump assembly unless it all was bad. The pump is the really expensive part. I just put the motor on and it works great.

If the tilt and trim motor works fine but the engine won’t raise or lower, slips down when in the raised position or won’t stay trimmed, chances are that the problem is with the hydraulic pump or valve body assembly. … If the level is adequate, the problem is most likely with the hydraulic pump.

Use a short piece of wire as a jumper and jump it across the small red and small blue wires on the UP solenoid. MOTOR SHOULD RUN but may just click. IF IT JUST CLICKS then jump across the large red and large blue wires.
