If you have gotten this far and are scheduled to interview with a chief stew, this is because they like you already, as well as your experience, transferrable skills or references. The interview is more about personality and proving your suitability for the role without being over-confident. here

At wilsonhalligan we get asked this question a lot, and since we are arranging interviews daily, we do have a fairly good idea of what is expected. Still, we thought it would be interesting to ask those on board directly, specifically chief stewardesses, about what they look for when interviewing candidates. [links]

A great question is ‘what expectations do you have from someone that will fill this position?’. Ask what the interviewer is looking for, who will be a good fit for the yacht, and what does the job include that may not be written in the job description.

You can also take it one step further and say “ if offered, I would accept”. At equal skill levels, the interviewer will offer the job to the candidate who clearly expresses interest. Interviewers worry about making the wrong decision, help them choose you; it’s so easy and very effective. here

The key is to find which pain the interviewer needs to solve and to position yourself as the solution, as an adviser, a consultant. It takes some time to get it right, but it works! [links]

During the first yacht crew interview with any employer, we advise that you avoid asking about the salary, crew leave, flights, or additional perks. This is all information that can be communicated via your recruiter and negotiated before stepping aboard in your new role. You should also never speak negatively about previous employers, instead being diplomatic about any problems or issues you may have had that are making you want to find a new job.

Before your yacht crew interview, you should think about how you will appropriately answer these questions. Remember, your answers should always convey the fact that you are the solution to the captain’s recruitment problem and that you have the ideal set of skills and experience he or she is looking for. Never say that you want a yacht job simply because you like to travel, or because the job suits your lifestyle. You must connect with the interviewer’s needs, not yours. more

If you are asked in your yacht job interview if you have any questions, it’s always a good idea to ask about the crew, the yacht, or perhaps to clarify what your duties will be. You can also ask about possible training and development, which will demonstrate your willingness to learn and enthusiasm for the yachting industry. more
