Let the car run for a few minutes at normal idle. Then turn off engine and re install the air filter and housing. Now drive the car for 10 to 15 minutes or until hot ,allowing the carb cleaner to completely run through the system. Even if you don't feel any increase in performance, you can rest assured that you are doing all you can to care for and preserve the carburetor. In some cases, if the carb was dirty with carbon buildups, you will feel increased power and save fuel at the same time.

Before you start the car, spray a small amount of carb cleaner directly into the carb. Then remove your rags and any tools from the engine area and start the engine. Do NOT spray the lubricant into the carb. Start the engine and use the throttle control, since you want to be able to run the motor at a higher rpm while you spray in more carb cleaner fluid. This will help push the cleaner through and will also avoid stalling out the engine. Spray in short spirts, run the engine faster and then slow it down to normal idle and respray again. Do this a few times.

Put on your safety goggles and spray the "outside" of the carb with your lubricant, or the carb and choke cleaner. Be sure to spray the connections and attached moving parts, such as the throttle area linkage. Let the fluid set a moment or two and wipe up. If you have a heavy buildup of sludge and oils, clean with a small wire brush before the spray dries.

Using your manual as a guide, reassemble the carburetor (install any new components included in the rebuild kit such as gaskets, needle valve, etc.). Reinstall the carburetor to the engine, and adjust it according to the engine manufacturer’s instructions. You will need plenty of clean, lint-free rags; some carburetor cleaner (visit your local auto parts store; I prefer aerosol carb cleaner); glass, glazed-ceramic, or metal container(s) (or plastic that you know won’t be dissolved by the cleaner); eye protection; and chemically stable gloves. You will also want to read the safety information provided with the carburetor cleaner carefully, and work in a well ventilated area. Carb cleaner usually contains strong organic solvents that are flammable and poisonous, so be smart. Those solvents might also strip paint, eat the plastic lenses of your new spectacles and strip your skin of any lipid available on the surface — be careful!

Cleaning your small engine’s carburetor isn’t terribly daunting, but I recommend that you have the correct service manual for your engine and a carburetor rebuild kit on hand before tackling it. It’s a good idea to start this project without significant pressure to get your machine running that same morning, as it may take a bit of time.

Follow your engine manual’s instructions for removing and disassembling the carburetor — watch that you don’t lose any springs, screws or other small bits. Clean each piece carefully taking advantage of the strong solvent characteristics of the cleaner. Take special care with the little orifices you see in the carburetor body and in some of the valves. Avoid the temptation to ream the orifices with anything other than compressed air or aerosol cleaner. Those tiny openings are all related to gasoline and air flow and have everything to do with making the engine run efficiently and effectively. Some folks use a degreasing all-purpose cleaner called Simple Green to clean up their carburetors. Although Simple Green is one of my favorites for getting grease and oil out of my shirts and jeans, I doubt it would work well for removing the varnish deposits associated with old gasoline without heat. (I wonder what my wife Kate would say to the gassy, oily scent of boiled carburetor in her favorite Le Creuset pot?) If you go this route, please be sure the carb parts are free of gasoline residue before getting them anywhere near a stove burner.

In the best case scenario, with great gas cans and cool temperature, fuel will last for up to 12 months. Hot temperatures decrease the life span of your fuel, while stabilizers increase it. Don't use old fuel in your generator. more

Dirt also can enter the carburetor through the lawnmower’s fuel lines. Dirt gets there from the gas tank or from the gas can used to transfer fuel to the tank. Rust, varnish buildup from gasoline that has sat too long or dirt from the environment can wreck havoc if it reaches the carburetor. Even tiny particles of debris are enough to clog the ports of carburetor jets. Typically, a fuel filter prevents most such junk from reaching the carburetor, but not all lawnmowers have a fuel filter. here

Overfilling the oil reservoir, or crankcase, can cause a backup inside the lawnmower's carburetor. Excess engine oil must go somewhere, and it often finds the carburetor. A thin coating of oil tends to collect environmental dust, and the oil can create a dirty carburetor. Often, this problem has symptoms besides dirty components. As oil passes through the carburetor into the cylinder, it typically produces excessive smoke through the exhaust. Tipping a push mower on its side with the carburetor facing downward has the same effect as adding too much oil to the oil reservoir. [links]

A clogged air filter robs the engine of efficient performance, and it also can cause an engine to fail to run properly. Even with a clogged air filter, however, the carburetor’s internal parts remain clean. Problems occur if the air filter develops cracks in the gasket material around the filter medium or the medium is punctured. In those situations, dirt enters the carburetor and fouls its components. Replace a dirty or suspect air filter after cleaning the carburetor.

Deeper problems also can cause a carburetor to collect dirt. Damaged internal seals, such as a head gasket or cylinder rings, no longer prevent engine oil from slipping past. The oil collects in the carburetor and causes the same problems as an overfilled oil reservoir. Those issues are accompanied by excessive smoke expulsion through the exhaust.
