Think of it like a damn with a river of fuel behind it. It also saves wear and tear on the injectors themselves. Too much fuel pressure can ruin injectors.

One of the most common issues with any vehicle, including the Cadillac SRX, is when it has fuel pressure regulator issues. A bad fuel pressure regulator can cause all sorts of problems.
A bad fuel pressure regulator can put your Cadillac SRX out of commission. Here are a few of the most common symptoms of a bad fuel pressure regulator:
A priming fuel pump sounds like a high-pitched whine for a few seconds and can be heard with a sharp engine right after the ignition key is turned, but before the starter is engaged.
Now, a bad fuel pump can also feel a heck of a lot like a bad catalytic converter. Both conditions will make the motor feel like it is running out of wind when you hit the gas. A bad catalytic converter will not feel as jarring. It’s a smooth lack of power. If you are unsure, check out this article on troubleshooting catalytic converters . If you get P0420 or P0430 trouble codes with a scanner, it very well may be the catalytic converter causing these symptoms.

Sometimes when there is low fuel pressure, you may also get an oxygen sensor related trouble code as well. The real issue with diagnosing a bad fuel pump is that it resembles many other vehicular issues in terms of symptoms. Also, the symptoms are almost exactly the same as bad/clogged fuel filter.
One of the best indicators of a clogged fuel pump is going to be that the your SRX is difficult to start. This because there’s not enough fuel pressure to properly atomize the fuel as it enters the combustion chamber. more
In modern fuel injected vehicles, the fuel pump sits right in the fuel tank and “pushes” the gasoline to the fuel rail(s). It is in the fuel tank because “pushing” fuel to the fuel rail is easier than “pulling” the fuel, which is what an inline pump would do. While being in the fuel tank makes the pump more reliable, it also makes it a lot more difficult to get to.
If your car isn’t starting at all, and you hear the fuel pump prime that is usually a good indication that the pump is working to some capacity. Testing your SRX’s fuel pressure on each side of the pump would be the best way to diagnose this problem.
Disconnect the negative battery cable. Search for the Schrader valve on the fuel rail around the top of the engine, if your vehicle is equipped with fuel injection system. Some models use this valve for test purposes. This valve looks like the air valve on a bicycle tires. [links]
Unscrew the valve cap if there is one.
Unplug the inertia-switch's electrical connector. [links]
Start the engine and let it idle until it stalls. [links]
Wrap one or more shop rags around the port valve to catch the squirt of fuel that will come out as you depressurize the system.
Disconnect the negative battery cable using a wrench. This will prevent sparks, which could ignite fuel and fuel vapors.
Locate the cap on the fuel supply manifold. Slip the cap off and connect the pressure gauge to the pressure relief valve.
Remove the fuel pump relay. For most vehicles, the relay is in the engine bay fuse box. If you have difficulty locating it, consult your owner's manual fuse diagram. here
Reconnect the negative battery cable, gas cap and fuel pump relay when you are finished replacing the fuel filter. Turn the ignition on for a few seconds, and then turn it off. Repeat this for a few cycles to rebuild your fuel system pressure.
